OKX Copy Trading: Can You Still Open Positions After Reaching the Maximum Amount?

The short answer is no. Once the total margin used across all your copied positions reaches the maximum copy trading amount you set, the system will automatically stop opening any new copied positions for that trader. Copying will only resume after some of your existing positions are closed and margin is released. This limit is not a deliberate obstacle set by the platform; it is a normal risk control protection mechanism.

Understanding What "Maximum Copy Amount" Means

Open the OKX App, go to TradeCopy Trading, select the trader you want to follow, and enter the Copy Settings page. There you will see three key parameters: Per Order Copy Amount, Maximum Copy Amount, and Copy Mode (Fixed Margin / Ratio Copy).

The Maximum Copy Amount refers to the total margin cap you are willing to allocate across all copied positions for that trader. Once the cumulative margin of all copied positions reaches this number, the system will stop opening new copied positions.

What Exactly Happens After Reaching the Limit

Case A: You are using "Fixed Margin" mode

Suppose you set a per-order copy amount of 10 USDT and a maximum copy amount of 1000 USDT. Every time the trader opens a position, you follow with 10 USDT. When the cumulative copied total reaches 1000 USDT, the system will pause further copying. You will receive a push notification and email alert in the App, informing you that the maximum copy amount has been reached and copying has been paused. The My Copy Trading page will also show a paused status.

Case B: You are using "Ratio Copy" mode

In Ratio Copy mode, the amount for each copied trade is not fixed. The Maximum Copy Amount still acts as a hard cap. Once reached, the system stops opening new positions. If the cumulative margin later falls below the cap, the permission to open new positions will automatically resume.

Three Solutions After Reaching the Limit

Solution 1: Wait for Existing Positions to Close

When a copied position is closed, the released margin is added back to your available quota. If the total falls below the Maximum Copy Amount after the release, the system will automatically resume copying. You can see the corresponding position status change to closed under Current Copy Trading, and the My Copy Trading page status will switch from paused back to active.

Solution 2: Manually Adjust the Maximum Copy Amount

Go to TradeCopy Trading, enter the trader's detail page, tap the settings icon or Copy Management in the upper right corner, change the Maximum Copy Amount to a new larger value, and save. After the page confirms the change, the My Copy Trading status will return to active, and the system will recalculate whether the new cap has been reached.

Solution 3: Actively Close Some Positions in Advance

If you feel some copied positions are already in profit or you want to cut losses, you can manually close part of them to release margin: go to TradeFuturesPositions, find the position corresponding to the copy trade, and choose market or limit order to close it manually. After the position is closed, the available margin in AssetsTrading Account increases, and the copy trading system will automatically resume on the next check.

Risk warning: After manually closing a copied position, that part of your position is no longer linked to the trader. If the trader later operates in that direction again, your position is already gone and will not follow. So before closing, please confirm whether you want to fully exit a specific copied trade from that trader or just temporarily free up quota.

How to Verify the Operation Is Complete

Go to the My Copy Trading page. The current copy status should show as active, and the used amount displayed at the top, shown as used amount / maximum amount, should be less than the maximum amount you set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does reaching the maximum copy amount limit affect my manual trading?

A: No. The limit only restricts automatic copy trading for that trader. Your other manually opened positions and funds in the account are not affected.

Q: What is the relationship between the maximum copy amount and the platform's overall maximum limit?

A: The overall cumulative copy trading limit for copy trading users is 200,000 USDT. The maximum copy amount you set cannot exceed this platform limit. If your account tier or copy type is different, the specific limit shown in your App will prevail.

Q: If I change the maximum copy amount, will my existing copied positions be affected?

A: No. Changing the maximum copy amount only affects whether new positions can be opened in the future. Existing positions are not affected in any way.
