OKX Stops Spot Margin in Futures Mode: What Happens to Old Positions?

After OKX stops spot margin trading in Futures mode, your old positions will not be force-closed by the system, but you will lose the ability to open new positions or add to existing ones in Futures mode. How you handle old positions depends on why you originally used them: if you want to continue spot margin trading, switch your account mode to Multi-currency Margin or Portfolio Margin and use cross-margin spot leverage. If you don't want to continue, simply close your positions manually in Futures mode and repay your liabilities.

What happens to your old positions after the change

According to the official OKX announcement, starting from 17:00 (UTC+8) on November 24, 2026, the Futures account mode will no longer support spot margin trading. If you hold cross or isolated spot margin positions under this mode, after the adjustment:

Positions remain and can be closed manually, but you cannot open new positions or add to existing ones. The system will not close positions for you. You can still place closing orders to close positions. However, if you want to add margin, increase position size, or open a new leveraged position, it is no longer possible in Futures mode.

Unfilled ordinary open/add orders will be automatically canceled. The system will cancel ordinary spot margin orders with an "open or add" attribute between 15:00 and 16:00 (UTC+8) on November 25. Stop-loss/take-profit, trailing stop, iceberg, and time-weighted average price orders will not be actively canceled, but if triggered and judged as open or add orders, they will fail to execute. So if you have placed strategy orders, you need to check them in advance to make sure they don't remain after becoming invalid.

If you want to continue spot margin trading: switch account mode

The alternative path given in the OKX announcement is to switch your account to Spot mode, Multi-currency Margin mode, or Portfolio Margin mode, and then use cross-margin spot leverage.

There is one important difference to note. In Futures mode, spot margin creates an independent "position" where you can see borrow liabilities and interest in the position panel. In Multi-currency Margin cross mode, spot leveraged trading does not create a position. After an order is filled, it is directly reflected in your asset balance, and borrowings exist as liabilities. The way leverage is presented differs between the two modes. After switching, don't assume something is wrong just because you can't find your leveraged position in the position panel—check your asset balance and liabilities instead.

Multi-currency Margin mode has entry requirements. OKX help documentation shows that switching requires total account equity above a certain amount (different pages mention 10,000 USD and 50,000 USD; refer to the actual prompt on the switching page), and you may need to pass a knowledge test. Portfolio Margin mode has similar thresholds and conditions that are also verified on the switching page. If your account equity does not meet the requirements, Spot mode is a simpler option, but it only supports spot trading and option buying, not leverage.

My assessment is: if you only occasionally use spot margin and your position size is not large, switching to Multi-currency Margin cross mode is closest to your original usage habits. If you don't have a strong need for leverage, or your account equity doesn't meet the threshold, it's better to give up leveraged operations in Futures mode, close your old positions, and return to ordinary spot trading. Trying to meet the margin threshold just to keep a leverage function is not worth the cost and risk.

If you don't want to continue: close positions manually and repay liabilities

In Futures mode, you can still place closing orders. Closing a spot margin position involves repaying borrowed funds. The operation path is to find the corresponding trading pair's position in the spot margin position area of the trading interface and execute the close. After closing, confirm that liabilities are cleared—if there are still outstanding borrowings and accumulated interest, liability records will remain in your account. Interest is deducted hourly on the hour. The longer you delay, the larger the liability becomes.

One easy-to-overlook detail: if you hold an isolated spot margin position in Futures mode, risk and margin are isolated, so closing it will not affect other positions. In cross mode, positions of the same currency share margin. After closing a leveraged position, the released margin returns to that currency's cross account and can be used for other trades or withdrawals.

Two things to check in advance

Whether strategy orders are still active. The announcement clearly states that strategy orders will not be automatically canceled, but they will fail when triggered. If you have stop-loss/take-profit orders attached to old positions, they may still work normally before the change takes effect, but after it does, triggering will fail. It is recommended to proactively check spot margin-related strategy orders before the effective date. Cancel what needs to be canceled and change what needs to be changed to manual execution.

API users need to modify code. If you use the API to submit spot margin opening orders in Futures mode, you will receive a "feature discontinued" error message after the change takes effect. Specific error codes are subject to the API update notes released by OKX at that time. Strategies that rely on the API for spot margin need to adjust both the account mode switch and order submission interface before the effective date.
