For OKX Singapore users, whether to opt for Accredited Investor (AI) status depends on whether you value product access or regulatory protection more. If you opt in, you get access to earn products, higher cashback, and lower trading fees that retail users cannot access. The trade-off is that OKX is no longer legally required to assess whether these products are suitable for you. You give up some of the regulatory safeguards that retail users enjoy.

Benefit Differences: What You Get by Opting In

The exclusive benefits for Accredited Investors listed on OKX Singapore's official help page are concentrated in a few areas:

Earn Products: Up to 8% annual yield on USDG balances, 3.5% annual yield on RLUSD balances, plus access to On-chain Earn and BTC Yield+. These products are not available to retail users.

Spending and Payments: Up to 10% cashback on eligible spending with the OKX card, and USDG in the Pay wallet also earns yield.

Trading Fees: Accredited Investors enjoy lower spot trading fees. But note that this is a separate system from VIP tiers—Accredited Investor is a regulatory classification, while VIP is an account level determined by trading volume or asset holdings. One does not automatically grant you the other.

Additional Perks: VIP Accredited Investors get up to 12 free airport luxury transfers per year, priority invitations to private events, and more.

These benefits have real value, but you need to weigh them against your own usage habits. If you don't use earn products and don't trade frequently, the actual difference from fee discounts and cashback may be limited.

Protection Differences: What You Give Up by Opting In

OKX states it directly on the English-language Accredited Investor confirmation page: once you choose to be treated as an Accredited Investor, OKX does not need to verify your financial situation, investment experience, or investment objectives, and may not be able to assess the suitability of any particular product for you. You take full responsibility for all investment decisions, and OKX bears no liability. You also lose certain regulatory safeguards, information rights, and reporting that retail users would otherwise have.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) takes the same position: financial institutions must first treat all customers as retail investors and provide full protections. Accredited Investor is a category you actively opt into after meeting the threshold. Once in, you get access to more products but do not enjoy the same level of regulatory protection. MAS also requires financial institutions to clearly explain what protections you are giving up before you opt in.

There is one point that can be confusing. The OKX Chinese help page states that "Accredited Investor status itself does not increase the risks you bear," and notes that client asset segregation and custody requirements apply equally to retail and Accredited Investors. This statement is not wrong, but it refers to basic safeguards at the custody level, not sales-level protections like product suitability assessment or disclosure requirements. What you give up is the latter. Once you opt in as an Accredited Investor, OKX no longer has an obligation to judge whether a complex product is suitable for you. That responsibility shifts to you.

My Take: When to Opt In and When Not To

When it's worth opting in: You actually use OKX Singapore's earn products (USDG, RLUSD, on-chain staking), or you trade frequently enough that cumulative fee savings are significant. You understand that these products may involve additional market risk, liquidity risk, or smart contract risk, and you don't need the platform to do suitability checks for you. You meet the income or asset thresholds and can provide the required proof.

When it's not worth opting in: You mainly use OKX for spot trading and don't touch earn or complex products. You value the regulatory protections that retail users enjoy and want the platform to bear suitability assessment obligations when recommending products. Or you're merely "eligible" but don't actually use those exclusive features—giving up protections for benefits you won't use is not a good deal.

A boundary worth clarifying: Accredited Investor status can be withdrawn at any time. OKX's page states that you have the right to exit Accredited Investor treatment at any time following the established procedures. After withdrawal, your account returns to retail treatment, but transactions already completed and products already held before withdrawal are not affected. If you opt in and later find it's not useful or change your mind, the exit path exists.

Eligibility Thresholds and Application Process

Individuals qualify if they meet any one of the following:

  • Personal income of at least SGD 300,000 (or equivalent in foreign currency) in the past 12 months;
  • Personal net assets of at least SGD 2 million, of which the net value of your primary residence can count for up to SGD 1 million;
  • Net financial assets of at least SGD 1 million.

According to MAS guidelines, crypto asset holdings are counted at 50% of market value toward net assets, up to a maximum of SGD 200,000.

The application process has three steps: complete identity and eligibility verification via Singpass or by submitting documents; complete a short knowledge quiz; read and agree to the relevant terms. The income route can typically use Singpass to pull your Notice of Assessment from the previous tax year, while the net assets route generally requires submitting electronic documents.

About Referral Codes
