KYC only confirms "who you are." The knowledge test confirms "whether you understand what you are getting into." In Singapore, these two things are driven by different regulatory requirements: KYC is the foundation of anti-money laundering and identity verification, while the knowledge test is a consumer protection requirement imposed by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) on Digital Payment Token (DPT) service providers. After retail users of OKX Singapore complete identity verification, the system triggers this test. It is not optional — it is a prerequisite for continuing to use trading functions.

The legal source and practical purpose of this test
MAS has issued consumer protection guidelines for DPT service providers, requiring them to assess retail users' understanding of DPT-related risks. OKX calls this assessment a "knowledge test" or "risk awareness assessment." Its purpose is to ensure that users understand the main risks involved in digital asset services before continuing to trade.
This is not a process OKX added on its own. During the same period, MAS-regulated platforms such as Coinbase Singapore and Revolut Singapore also enabled similar risk awareness assessments for retail users. In other words, this is a unified regulatory requirement for this type of service provider in Singapore. You cannot avoid it by switching to another compliant platform.
Who needs to take it: Individual retail customers registered with OKX Singapore, triggered after completing identity verification. Corporate or institutional clients do not need to take it. If you are unsure about your account type, the nature of the entity you selected during account registration determines whether you will see this test entry.
What happens if you do not take it or fail
From June 19, 2025, Singapore retail accounts that have not passed the knowledge test will have restricted functions. Restricted accounts can only perform three types of operations: converting digital assets to fiat currency, withdrawing digital assets to external accounts not maintained by OKX Singapore, and withdrawing fiat currency. Full trading permissions will be suspended until the test is passed, unless the account has other restrictions as well.
This restriction logic is worth noting: it preserves your "exit" channel (selling to fiat, withdrawing assets), but closes your "continue buying or trading" channel. The regulatory intent is to ensure that you do not continue increasing exposure without understanding the risks, but it will not trap you on the platform.
Passing standard: Answer at least 4 out of 6 questions correctly. The test result will be notified in the app. There is no limit on retakes if you fail. The official recommendation is to review the learning materials provided by the platform before retaking. Most users can complete it within 5 minutes.
What the test roughly covers
OKX's official FAQ does not list specific questions, but based on MAS guidelines and the assessment scope disclosed by other Singapore platforms, the questions are designed around the core risks of DPT. Independent Reserve's preparation notes for its Singapore risk awareness quiz list several areas that can serve as a reference for understanding the test focus, but please note this is not OKX's official question bank:
Price volatility risk: Cryptocurrency prices may rise or fall sharply in a short period. No government or platform guarantees the value of your holdings, and losses are borne by you.
Liquidity risk: In extreme market conditions, it may be difficult to sell in time. Exchanges may also temporarily suspend trading, preventing you from exiting at the expected price.
Custody risk: When assets are held on an exchange, the platform holds them on your behalf. The platform may suffer hacking attacks, operational problems, or mismanagement. Regulation can reduce but cannot eliminate such risks.
Technical risk: Phishing attacks, fake websites, and leakage of private keys or account credentials can all lead to asset loss.
The test format is multiple choice, not essay questions, so there is no need to memorize definitions. Its design logic is to ensure users have at least been exposed to these risk concepts, not to assess professional expertise. If you have a basic understanding of concepts like contracts, leverage, and withdrawal networks, the probability of passing without preparation is not low. If you are unsure, spending a few minutes reviewing the risk disclosure materials on the platform before answering is more time-efficient than retaking the test repeatedly.
A detail that needs to be distinguished
OKX also has another "knowledge quiz" that appears in the process of applying for Accredited Investor status. That is for users who want to receive accredited investor treatment, and its purpose is to confirm that they understand the relevant product rules. It is not the same test as the MAS retail user risk awareness assessment discussed in this article. If what you see in your account is a small quiz attached to the accredited investor application entry, it addresses qualification certification. If what you see after completing KYC is a mandatory prompt for "risk awareness assessment" or "knowledge test," that is the test discussed here — not taking it will affect your trading permissions.
What to confirm after passing
After passing the test, you will receive a notification in the app, and trading permissions should be restored. The way to verify is to attempt a small transaction (or check whether the previously restricted order function is available again), rather than assuming everything is fine just by looking at the notification. If the test shows passed but functions are still restricted, first check whether the account has other uncompleted verifications or restrictions. The knowledge test is only one of the unlocking conditions, not the only one.
