The US OKX Card involves two separate financial relationships when you make purchases and repay them. The money you spend is initially advanced by the issuing bank, WebBank, creating a debt you must repay. The stablecoins you hold in OKX Pay, such as USDG, are the source of funds used to repay that debt—they are not collateral being "spent." Mixing up these two concepts can easily lead to misjudgments about repayments, cashback, and your account balance.

The US Version is a Credit Card, Not a Debit Card
The OKX Card is a different product in different regions. The European version is a debit card, deducting funds directly from your stablecoin balance when you swipe. The US version, issued by WebBank, is a secured charge card operating on a revolving credit mechanism: spend first, repay later, with the repayment source being the stablecoins you hold in OKX Pay.
This distinction means the two sets of numbers you see have completely different meanings:
Debt (Card Balance / Statement Balance): This is how much you have spent and need to repay, recorded by WebBank. It is your debt to the card issuer.
Stablecoin Balance (OKX Pay Balance): This is the USDG, USDC, or USDT you hold in your OKX Pay account, which you use to repay your debt. It is not debt itself, and it is not automatically "collateralized" or "frozen" when you swipe your card—unless you have enabled auto-repayment or a transaction triggers a pre-authorization hold.
One detail to note: OKX's US card page describes the product as "secured" by USDC/USDT/USDG. This wording can easily give the impression that your stablecoins are locked up. In reality, "secured" here means your OKX Pay stablecoin balance serves as proof of your repayment ability and the source for deductions, not that your coins are locked in a contract like a collateralized loan. You can still use or adjust this balance before the payment due date, provided there are sufficient funds in your account when repayment is due.
When Repaying, Stablecoins are Deducted and Debt is Cleared
OKX supports two repayment methods: Manual Repayment (Manual/Fiat repayment) and Auto Repayment (Auto repayment). The key difference is not just about convenience—it directly affects your cashback eligibility.
Only purchases settled via USDG auto-repayment qualify for cashback. Repaying with USDC, USDT, or manually with fiat currency will not trigger cashback. This means if your goal is to earn cashback, you must hold USDG in your OKX Pay account and enable the auto-repayment feature. Cashback is paid out in USDG directly into your OKX Pay account.
The repayment function is located in the OKX Pay or Card section within the OKX App. To verify a successful repayment, check two places: whether the credit card statement status has changed from "unpaid" to "paid," and whether your OKX Pay balance has decreased by the corresponding repayment amount. The former confirms the debt has been cleared, and the latter confirms the funds were deducted. Both must occur for the repayment to be complete.
If you enable auto-repayment, the system will deduct funds from your OKX Pay stablecoin balance on the due date according to the priority you set. The priority setting determines which coin is deducted first. If your USDG balance is insufficient but you have plenty of USDC, the system may deduct USDC to repay the debt—but that purchase will not earn cashback. There is a trade-off between the convenience of auto-repayment and cashback eligibility: to ensure cashback, you must ensure your USDG balance is sufficient to cover your statement.
Pre-authorization Holds Are Not Debt, But They Tie Up Your Stablecoins
Hotels, car rentals, gas stations, and similar merchants often initiate pre-authorizations. When you swipe your card, the amount requested by the merchant (which may be higher than the final charge) is temporarily frozen from your OKX Pay balance. This money cannot be used for other purchases. The frozen stablecoin amount appears as a reduction in your balance, but it is not debt—you have not actually spent that money yet.
Once the merchant submits the final transaction amount, only the actual charge will be deducted, and the excess frozen amount from the pre-authorization will be automatically released back to your available balance. If you check your account during a pre-authorization period and see that your "available balance" is lower than your "total balance," first check whether there is an unreleased pre-authorization hold rather than assuming you were overcharged.
A Situation That Requires Real Caution: Negative Balance
If the settled transaction amount exceeds the authorized amount (usually due to exchange rate fluctuations), a negative balance may occur. When a negative balance appears, your Card and OKX Pay wallet will be frozen until you restore the balance to zero or positive. A negative balance constitutes a debt you owe to the card issuer, and you need to transfer in sufficient stablecoins to clear it.
Whether this scenario applies to the US version of the product is not clearly distinguished in public documentation. The rules above come from OKX's product disclosure documents for the Australian market. For the specific terms of the US version, you should refer to the agreement provided by WebBank when you opened your account. Logically, any "authorize first, settle later" payment mechanism carries the possibility of a settlement amount differing from the authorized amount; the difference lies only in the trigger conditions and processing procedures. If you encounter a frozen card and a negative balance notification while using the US version, first check whether the settlement amount of the most recent transaction differs from the authorized amount, then follow the in-app instructions to add sufficient stablecoins.
What to Do After Understanding the Difference
After each card swipe, take a minute to check two places: the status of the transaction in your Card transaction history (whether it has been posted or is still pending authorization), and how much USDG and other stablecoins you have in your OKX Pay balance. Your debt is what you owe to WebBank, and your stablecoins are your ability to repay. Before the due date, confirm that your USDG balance is sufficient to cover the statement and that auto-repayment is enabled—only then will cashback arrive as expected.
