OKX offers three main copy trading modes: Fixed Amount, Fixed Ratio, and the newer Smart Sync. The core difference: Fixed Amount invests the same sum each time, Fixed Ratio copies the trader's position size at a multiplier, and Smart Sync automatically matches your capital proportionally – the simplest to use.

Fixed Amount Mode: Same Investment Every Trade
Fixed Amount is the most basic and easiest mode, perfect for beginners. You set a "fixed amount per trade" (e.g. 10 USDT). Each time the trader opens a position, the system automatically takes 10 USDT from your account to copy it.
How to use: On the copy trading settings page, select "Fixed Margin" as the copy mode, then set "Amount Per Copy" and "Maximum Copy Amount".
How it completes: Whenever the trader opens a position, the system invests your fixed amount until the maximum copy amount is reached.
Pros: Each trade's cost is predictable and budgeting is easy. Good for small capital users who just want to test the waters.
Cons: If the trader has a large account and opens a position using only 1% of their capital, your 10 USDT trade might represent a much larger percentage of your account. Your actual risk exposure no longer matches the trader's.
Fixed Ratio Mode: Copy at a Multiplier of the Trader's Position
In Fixed Ratio mode, you set a "copy multiplier". Each copied position value = trader's position value × your multiplier. For example, if the trader opens 10,000 USDT and your multiplier is 0.1, you will copy with 1,000 USDT.
How to use: On the copy trading settings page, switch to "By Ratio", then input "Copy Ratio Per Trade" (range 0.01–10).
How it completes: Every time the trader opens a position, the system calculates the copy amount using your multiplier and opens the trade automatically.
Pros: Each copied amount stays proportional to the trader's position, helping you follow their strategy more closely. Your overall profit and loss becomes more aligned with the trader's.
Cons: If the multiplier is set too high, the leverage may become excessive and easily lead to liquidation. OKX recommends using the "smart recommended multiplier" as a reference.
Smart Sync Mode: Automatic Capital Proportion Matching, One-Click Copy
Smart Sync is OKX's newest copy trading mode and the easiest to operate. You only need to set an "investment amount". The system automatically calculates the proportion of the trader's position to their total capital, then applies the same proportion to your account.
How it works: If the trader has 10,000 USDT and opens a 1,000 USDT position (10% of capital), and your account has 1,000 USDT, the system will copy with 100 USDT (also 10% of your capital).
Extra features: Leverage, margin mode and other parameters are automatically synced with the trader. Capital is isolated per trader, so following multiple traders won't cause over-leverage.
How to use: Select "Smart Sync" mode on the copy trading settings page. Just enter your investment amount; all other settings are matched automatically.
How it completes: When the trader opens a position, the system automatically calculates and copies proportionally, keeping your capital dedicated and isolated for that trader's copies.
| Comparison | Fixed Amount | Fixed Ratio | Smart Sync |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capital Calculation | Fixed amount per trade | Trader's position × multiplier | Auto-matched by account capital proportion |
| Ease of Use | Low | Medium | Lowest (one-click copy) |
| Risk Control | Single trade amount fixed | Position proportional to trader | Parameters auto-synced, capital isolated |
| Best For | Beginners wanting to control each trade | Experienced users wanting to mirror the trader | All users, especially futures beginners |
Common Reasons for Failure
Funds running out quickly in Fixed Amount mode: If the trader opens positions frequently, Fixed Amount mode keeps deducting the fixed amount, which can quickly drain your available balance and cause later orders to fail. OKX notes that for fixed margin copy users, make sure Maximum Copy Amount / single trade amount is greater than the trader's number of layered entries; otherwise some copy trades may be skipped.
Multiplier set too high in Fixed Ratio mode: In ratio copy mode, a too-large multiplier can make the actual leverage of your copied position too high and raise the liquidation risk.
Smart Sync mode copy balance insufficient: When the trader adjusts positions and your copy account balance cannot cover the proportionally calculated amount, syncing the trader's adjustment may fail.

After You Start Copying
Verification: After starting, check the "Copy Details" page to view current positions and used amounts, and confirm the copy mode displayed matches your selection.
Next step: For your first copy, a small start with Fixed Amount is recommended. Run a few trades to observe your capital consumption speed and actual slippage. If using Smart Sync, be sure to set your "copy stop loss" – once total losses reach the set value, the system will automatically end the copy relationship and close all positions.
