Old positions will not be recalculated; new positions follow the new mode. Switching from "Fixed Amount" to "Proportional" only affects the calculation method for future copy trades. Existing positions continue to run independently under the original mode until they are closed.
1. The Calculation Logic Between the Two Modes Is Completely Different
The two copy trading modes calculate position sizes differently, so old positions can't be converted when you switch.
Fixed Amount Each copied trade uses a fixed margin amount. For example, if you set 20 USDT per trade, each time the lead trader opens a new position, your system will use 20 USDT to copy.
Proportional (Fixed Ratio) The position size is calculated based on the total amount of your copy trading portfolio relative to the lead trader's margin balance. For instance, if you set 500 USDT as your total copy trading budget and the lead trader uses 50% of their margin to open a position, the system will calculate your copy trade using 50% of your total (i.e., 250 USDT).
The underlying logic is entirely different. Old positions were opened under the old logic, and when you switch modes, they are frozen as part of "historical data" and cannot be recalculated.
2. You Must Close All Old Positions Before Switching Modes
Binance's official rules clearly state: Before switching copy trading modes, you need to close all unfinished positions in the project. If any old positions are still open, the system will not allow you to switch modes directly. You must manually handle these holdings first.
This is not a system limitation but a risk control design. If it didn't require closing positions first, the two different calculation logics running simultaneously in the same project would cause chaotic position sizing.
3. Stop-Loss and Take-Profit Orders on Old Positions Won't Be Updated
Another common misconception after switching modes is thinking that old stop-loss and take-profit orders will automatically update.
The rules state clearly: "Editing the stop-loss and take-profit settings for a copy trading project only applies to new positions." The TP/SL orders attached to old positions at the time they were opened will not be canceled or updated after you switch modes; they will remain active until triggered or manually canceled.
Prerequisite: You have an active copy trading project with open copied positions.
4. Step-by-Step: How to Switch Correctly
Step 1: Close All Old Positions
What to do: Manually close all open positions in the current copy trading project.
How to do it: Go to the [My Copy Trading] page, find the current project, and close each open position one by one. If the lead trader is still holding a position, you can also choose "Do not follow current position" to exit early.
How to know it's complete: The "Current Positions" list for that copy trading project is empty, with no open orders.
Step 2: Switch the Copy Trading Mode in Settings
What to do: Go to the project settings and change the copy mode from "Fixed Amount" to "Proportional".
How to do it: Find the [Copy Trading Mode] option on the settings page, select "Proportional", and save. You will be asked to confirm the new total portfolio amount when saving.
How to know it's complete: The page shows "Saved successfully" and the copy trading mode is updated to the new mode.
Step 3: Verify the Status of Old Stop-Loss/Take-Profit Orders
What to do: After closing old positions, check whether the previously placed TP/SL orders are still active.
How to do it: Go to [Open Orders] or [Order History]. If the TP/SL orders tied to the old closed positions are still listed and their status is "Canceled" or "Filled", they have been handled normally. If any residual old TP/SL orders remain, cancel them manually.
How to know it's complete: There are no old stop-loss or take-profit orders pointing to already-closed positions in the current order list.
Risk Reminder: After switching modes, the way copy trade amounts are calculated for new positions changes completely. If the total portfolio amount is set incorrectly, each copied trade could be too small (causing failed copy trades due to minimum trade limits) or too large (rapidly depleting your account balance). It is recommended to carefully recalculate the new proportional parameters before switching.
After completing the steps, how do you confirm the switch is effective?
Check the settings page of the current project: if the copy trading mode field now shows "Proportional", new positions will be executed under the new mode. Also check the current order list to confirm no residual old TP/SL orders remain. The profit/loss and liquidation price of your old positions were locked in the moment you closed them and will not change because you later modified the mode.
