To open retail futures on OKX Australia, the main requirement is not money. It is a two-step process: a suitability assessment and a knowledge test. Only after you pass both will derivatives trading be activated on your OKX Australia account. If you just want to "try one trade first," you still need to complete this process first.

Check Your Eligibility Before You Start

Before applying, you can check OKX's target market standards for retail clients to see if you fit the intended user profile:

  • Identity and Account: You must be at least 18 years old, an Australian resident, and have a verified OKX Australia account.

  • Financial Threshold: Your annual income must be at least 50,000 AUD, and you must hold at least 20,000 AUD in liquid assets.

  • Trading Experience: You should have trading experience in stocks, forex, or spot cryptocurrency markets.

  • Risk Tolerance: You must understand and accept that derivatives trading carries the risk of losing all the USDT you put in.

If your funds are needed for daily living expenses, or you cannot afford to lose all the USDT you deposit, this product may not be suitable for you.

Step 1: Suitability Assessment

This is the first step in the process. It usually includes a set of questions about your financial situation, investment goals, risk tolerance, and trading experience.

Results and Waiting Periods:

  • If you fail the first assessment, you can try again after 24 hours.

  • If you fail the second assessment, you will be temporarily considered ineligible and must wait 90 days before trying again.

Step 2: Knowledge Assessment

After passing the suitability assessment, you move to the knowledge test. This is a 12-question test covering core derivatives concepts such as leverage, margin requirements, funding rates, and forced liquidation mechanisms.

Passing Requirements and Waiting Periods:

  • You must answer at least 10 out of 12 questions correctly to pass.

  • If you fail, you must wait 24 hours before retaking the test.

  • If you fail 3 times in a row, the waiting period extends to 30 days.

  • If you fail 5 times in a row, your derivatives access will be permanently locked, and you will not be allowed to try again.

Step 3: Placing Your First Trade and Key Parameters

Once you pass both assessments, retail derivatives access is activated automatically. Placing your first trade is not complicated, but there are a few parameters you should understand in advance.

Transferring Funds: Derivatives trading uses USDT as margin. You need to transfer USDT from your funding account to your trading account first.

Opening the Futures Page: On the OKX app or website, go to the Trade page, select the Futures tab, and choose USDT-margined contracts.

Setting Leverage: The maximum leverage for OKX Australia retail derivatives is 2x. This means if you deposit 1,000 USDT as margin, you can open a position worth up to 2,000 USDT. Before placing an order, you need to select the leverage multiple in the trading interface. The default or initial setting may be different, so you need to manually adjust it to match your plan.

Placing the Order: Choose a trading pair (for example, BTCUSDT), enter the position size, and then select Buy Long or Sell Short to open a position. After opening, you can monitor your position in the Positions tab.

Key Protections and Limits for Retail Clients

Compared with users in other jurisdictions, Australian retail derivatives clients are subject to a set of additional restrictions and protections:

  • Leverage Cap: Hard limited to 2x. You cannot select a higher multiple.

  • Negative Balance Protection: The most you can lose is the USDT you deposited into your derivatives trading account. You will not owe the platform money due to losses.

  • Margin Forced Liquidation Protection: When your account equity approaches the maintenance margin requirement, the platform will trigger a protection mechanism. However, this does not guarantee that liquidation can always be avoided in fast-moving markets.

  • Mandatory Disclosure Documents: Before applying, you should read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), Financial Services Guide (FSG), and Terms of Service.

The maintenance margin requirement for retail futures is a fixed 25% of the notional value at the time of opening the position. This applies uniformly to all contracts and position sizes, with no tiered levels. When the maintenance margin rate reaches 100% or below, forced liquidation will be triggered.
