Should Australian Users Register on OKX with a Mobile Number or Email?

For Australian users, it's not a question of "either-or" – you must have both a mobile number and an email bound to your OKX account. You only need to decide which one to use first when signing up, as it will affect how you log in and receive notifications on a day-to-day basis.

Step 1: Registration Entry – Choose Mobile Number or Email

Open the OKX app or website and click Sign Up. Under "Country/Region" find Australia, and the area code will automatically be set to +61.

The system will first ask you to enter one form of contact:

Option A: Use a mobile number as the registration entry → Enter your Australian mobile number without the leading zero (e.g., for 0412 345 678, enter 412 345 678) with the +61 area code displayed. Tap to receive a verification code, then enter the 6-digit code sent via SMS.

Option B: Use an email address as the registration entry → Enter your email address (Outlook, Gmail, QQ Mail, etc. are all accepted), tap to receive a verification code, and enter the 6-digit code sent to your inbox.

The verification code is valid for 10 minutes.

Completion criteria: The verification code is accepted and you proceed to the next step.

Prerequisites: An Australian mobile number that can receive SMS (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone are all fine) and a working email address.

Step 2: Mandatory Binding of the Other Contact Method

Regardless of which method you used in Step 1, the system requires you to bind the other contact method in the next step:

  • If you signed up with a mobile number → you must then enter and verify an email address.

  • If you signed up with an email → you must then enter and verify a mobile number.

OKX's rule is clear: both a mobile number and an email must be bound during registration.

Completion criteria: Both your phone number and email are successfully verified.

Common failure reason: The phone number or email you are trying to use has already been registered. Each mobile number and email can only be linked to one OKX account. If the system says "already registered," it means you already have an account. You can log in with that information directly or follow the account merging process if needed.

Step 3: Which Entry is Better for Australian Users?

Even though both methods end up being linked, the one you use first affects your daily login habits.

Changing Contact DetailsMust re-bind a new phone number; otherwise you won't receive verification codesEmail remains stable; changing phone number won't affect login
Local Experience in AustraliaQuick login without needing to remember your emailConvenient for multi-device login

Recommendation:

  • If you live in Australia long-term and keep a stable mobile number, signing up with your phone number first is more convenient – typing a phone number during login is faster than an email address.

  • If you travel frequently or worry about changing your number, signing up with email first is safer – email notifications are more comprehensive and won't be affected by a phone number change.

Step 4: Complete Registration and Proceed to KYC

Set a login password – it must be 8-20 characters and contain uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numbers. Read and tick the Terms of Service, then click to finish registration.

After registration, you must complete identity verification (KYC); otherwise you cannot deposit, trade, or withdraw. Australian users need to submit an Australian driver's licence, passport, or Photo Card as identification.

Completion criteria: Registration is successful and you can log into your account normally.

Risk reminder: The "Country/Region of Residence" selected during registration must be Australia, and the ID document submitted for KYC must match your Australian residence. Mismatched information will lead to verification rejection.

How to Verify Your Registration

Log in once using the method you chose (mobile number or email). If you can access your account normally, your registration was successful. Check your registered email – if you received a welcome confirmation email from OKX, your email binding is active and all future system notifications will be sent there.

Next step: Complete identity verification (KYC) immediately. Only after passing KYC can you use deposit and trading features. You can enter referral code 24U2795 during registration if available.
