What KYC Level Is Required to Trade Futures on OKX? Trading Permissions Explained
Many users complete Level 1 verification and immediately look for the futures trading tab, only to find it locked. This isn't a bug – futures trading requires Level 2 (Advanced) verification. Level 1 only gives you access to spot and P2P trading.
KYC Levels and Futures Access at a Glance
| Verification Level | Futures Trading | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unverified | Not available | Can only browse market data |
| Level 1 (Basic) | Not available | Spot and P2P trading only |
| Level 2 (Advanced) | Available | Unlocks futures, margin, options and all derivatives |
| Level 3 (Professional) | Available (higher limits) | Allows application to become a lead trader |
Level 1 users who open the futures page will see "Trading unavailable" or be prompted to complete advanced verification. This is a platform compliance requirement, not a bug.
Three Steps to Enable Futures Trading
Level 2 verification alone is not enough — you must complete the full process below to activate futures trading.
1. Complete Level 2 Identity Verification
What you need to do: Provide proof of address on top of Level 1 documentation to achieve advanced verification.
How to do it:
Open OKX App → [My Profile] → [Security Center] → [Identity Verification]
Tap [Upgrade] next to Level 2
Upload a utility bill, bank statement or government letter issued within the last 3 months (proof of address)
Re-submit your ID photos and complete face recognition or a video recording
Wait 1–3 business days for manual review
When it's done: The Identity Verification page shows "Level 2 Verified".
2. Read and Accept the Risk Disclosure Agreement
What you need to do: The first time you enter the futures trading page, a mandatory risk disclosure pops up.
How to do it:
Switch to the [Trade] → [Futures] tab
The system automatically displays the Futures Trading Risk Disclosure
Read the terms carefully, ensure you understand concepts like leverage, liquidation mechanisms and associated risks, then check the box to agree
When it's done: You enter the futures trading interface without further pop-ups.
3. Pass the Futures Knowledge Test
What you need to do: Complete a multiple-choice quiz covering the basics of futures trading.
How to do it:
During the activation process, the system will require you to take an online knowledge test
The questions focus on basic concepts such as margin, leverage multiples, forced liquidation mechanisms, and maintenance margin ratio
You generally need to answer at least 8 out of 10 questions correctly to pass
If you fail, you can study the materials and retake the test — unlimited attempts
When it's done: You will see "Test Passed" and gain access to the main futures trading interface.
Strict KYC Requirements for Futures Trading
OKX enforces clear KYC thresholds for futures access:
Level 1 users: Cannot open any position on the futures page. The futures tab is visible but non-functional.
Level 2 users: Unlock all derivatives trading, including futures, margin and options, with a boosted daily withdrawal limit of up to 1,000,000 USD.
Level 3 users: In addition to Level 2 privileges, Level 3 users can apply to become a lead trader, provided they meet additional criteria such as having a balance above 500 USDT and no more than 500 daily position opens.
Risk Reminder: Futures trading involves leverage, which can amplify both gains and losses, potentially leading to a total loss of your principal or even account deficit. OKX's mandatory knowledge test is essentially a built-in risk warning — users who don't pass cannot activate futures.
Troubleshooting: What to Do If You Can't Trade Futures
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| "Trading unavailable" on the futures page | Level 2 verification not completed | Go to Security Center and upgrade to Level 2 |
| Level 2 done, but futures tab is greyed out | Risk agreement not signed or test not passed | Enter the futures page to sign the agreement and complete the test |
| Failed the knowledge test repeatedly | Insufficient understanding of futures basics | Study futures trading resources and retake the test |
| Futures tab not visible in some regions | Regulatory restrictions in your location | Check local regulations on derivatives trading, and contact OKX support for guidance |
How to Confirm Futures Access Is Active
Go to [Trade] → [Futures]. If you can view candlestick charts for BTC/USDT and other contract pairs, and the "Open Position" button is clickable with fields for price and quantity, your futures trading permission is live. If you see "Not Supported" or "Insufficient Permissions", return to the Security Center and ensure your Level 2 status shows "Verified".
