Decentraland's official documentation is very direct: you do not need to own LAND to host events in Decentraland. Any community member can publish an event announcement for free. This means there is no necessary connection between "hosting an event" and "buying land." The real cost depends on whether you want a fixed, customizable venue, and whether you choose to buy or rent that space.

Three Venue Paths for Hosting Events

Decentraland offers several ways to publish scenes, and the costs vary greatly.

Worlds (Personal Spaces) are currently the lowest-cost option for a customizable venue. You only need to own a Decentraland NAME, which costs 100 MANA. Once you have a NAME, you can deploy an independent World scene and share it with others via a link. A World has a concurrent user limit of 100 people, which is enough for small gatherings, exhibitions, or product launches. It is not on the Genesis City map, but it saves you the cost of buying land.

Renting LAND is suitable for situations where you need visibility on the map but do not want to hold land long-term. Decentraland's rental system allows LAND owners to set daily prices, and renters pay in MANA. Rental periods are usually chosen in units of 7 or 30 days, depending on the options set by the landlord. Renting requires an on-chain transaction, which incurs gas fees. If you are only hosting a one-time event, renting a parcel is much more cost-effective than buying one.

Buying LAND is the most expensive option. A Parcel is 16x16 meters and is the smallest unit in Genesis City. According to third-party data, the average price of a Decentraland parcel is around $2,380. Once purchased, you have permanent usage rights and can deploy content at any time or rent it out to others.

A Budget Path for OKX Users

If your MANA is still on OKX, you need to withdraw it to a wallet that supports Decentraland (such as MetaMask) before you can make on-chain transactions. OKX supports buying MANA, but LAND and NAME transactions and rentals in Decentraland all happen on the Ethereum blockchain and require wallet signatures.

Budget levels can be divided into three tiers:

Lowest budget (almost free): Do not buy a NAME, do not rent land. Simply publish your event announcement in an existing public space or on someone else's land in Genesis City. The official rules clearly allow anyone to create an Event announcement for free. You only need to prepare the event content; the venue can be an existing public space.

Medium budget (around 100 MANA): Buy a Decentraland NAME and deploy it to your own World. The NAME price is a fixed 100 MANA, with no extra costs beyond gas fees. A World can hold 100 concurrent users, making it suitable for events that do not need map exposure.

Higher budget (depending on rent or land price): Rent LAND or buy LAND. The daily rental price is set by the landlord, so there is no unified standard. The price of buying land fluctuates more, depending on location and market demand, ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. Decentraland's DAO grants are an optional path. If your event proposal can gain community voting support, you can apply for funds to cover the cost of buying or renting land.

A Real-World Reference

Sugar Club in Decentraland had an operating budget of about $59,840 in 2023, of which event management and marketing accounted for $24,000, SDK development $12,000, and artist budget $12,000. This budget included no land purchase expenses, because Sugar Club has been operating in Decentraland for many years. This shows that the main cost of running events lies in content production, personnel, and technical maintenance, not necessarily in the land itself.

If your goal is to "host a single event," it is more advisable to start with the Worlds path. Spend 100 MANA to buy a NAME, and focus your energy on scene building and event planning, rather than spending thousands of dollars on land first. Once your event format and audience are stable, you can then consider whether you need to rent or buy a parcel on the Genesis City map to increase exposure.
