Can You Still Buy DATA After It Moves to Sui? Token Utility and Transition Risks

In the phrase "DATA moves to Sui," DATA does not refer to just one project. There are two tokens called DATA in the crypto market. One belongs to the Streamr project. The other belongs to Story Protocol, which has now been renamed DATA Foundation. The one moving to Sui is the latter. It has nothing to do with Streamr's DATA.

If you want to buy the DATA that is moving to Sui, note that its spot trading pair has already been delisted on Binance. You cannot buy it directly on Binance. If you search for DATA on Binance, the token you see belongs to Streamr. That token is not migrating to Sui. It went through a different renaming process.

How to Tell the Two DATA Tokens Apart

Story Protocol's DATA: The project was originally called Story Protocol and started as an IP public chain. In June 2026, it was renamed DATA Foundation, and the token was swapped from IP to DATA at a 1:1 ratio. In October 2026, the project announced it would move to Sui. Its original independent public chain will be retired, and the token will be mapped to Sui at a 1:1 ratio. Its previous IP token was once listed on Binance, but the IP/USDT trading pair ended on July 3, 2026. You cannot buy this DATA on Binance, whether it is the older IP token or the newer DATA token.

Streamr's DATA: This is an older project focused on decentralized real-time data streams. DATA is its ERC-20 token, used for network governance, node incentives, staking, and payments. This DATA is not moving to Sui. In June 2026, it went through a rename from DATA to STREAMR. That did not involve any on-chain token swap. Binance had already delisted Streamr's DATA spot trading pair in February 2026. Deposits and withdrawals were stopped even earlier.

Both projects have been delisted from Binance. If you see news about "DATA moving to Sui," it points to the Story Protocol line. If you see leftover DATA information on Binance, it may come from the Streamr line. Either way, Binance is not a channel where you can buy DATA right now.

What Is the Current Status of the DATA Moving to Sui?

According to an agreement announced on October 11, 2026, the Sui Foundation invested $30 million in DATA Network. DATA Network will upgrade from an independent public chain to a protocol running natively on Sui. The exact migration timeline has not been announced yet. The foundation said it will release a detailed schedule and a holder transition plan before the upgrade.

The token handling method is a 1:1 mapping. Existing DATA tokens will be converted to Sui at a one-to-one ratio. Holders' economic rights and governance rights will be "at least equal to current rights." Tokens with lock-up or vesting periods will remain unchanged. Before the upgrade is complete, the existing DATA Network chain will continue to run.

If you hold this DATA on-chain, wait for the official migration tool to go live and then follow the instructions. If you do not hold it yet, liquidity for buying this DATA on decentralized exchanges before the migration may already be very thin. Its delisting from Binance means the main liquidity entrance has closed. You need to check the depth of on-chain pools yourself.

How Has the Token Utility Changed?

During the Story Protocol period, the IP token's utility focused on IP licensing and royalty sharing. After the rename to D ATA, the project shifted toward AI training data. The publicly stated token utility is now: data source tracking and contributor settlement in the Trace registration system, as well as protocol governance after migration to Sui.

But this utility still has an unresolved question: whether on-chain registration and real authorization will attract AI companies that are actually willing to pay. PANews analysis pointed out that DATA Network's chain fee revenue is about $918 per day, and the project has "not disclosed any actual data buyers." The token's specific role on Sui—for example, whether it will be used to pay for data access or participate in incentives for the Walrus storage layer—has not been detailed in official announcements. We need to wait for the migration plan before judging.

Things You Need to Verify Yourself

First, confirm which DATA you are looking at. Check the contract address on CoinMarketCap or CoinGecko. Streamr's DATA contract is 0x8f69...b38b76 on Ethereum mainnet. The DATA token from the renamed Story Protocol is a different contract. Do not confuse them.

If you plan to buy the DATA that has migrated to Sui on-chain, wait until the official migration is complete and the token is tradable on Sui. The DATA before migration and the DATA after migration are assets on different chains. The contract address will change. Buying the asset on the wrong chain means you may end up with an extremely illiquid position.

If you still hold DATA on Binance, no matter which project it belongs to, check its withdrawal status. Delisting a trading pair on Binance does not mean the token disappears, but withdrawals may have a deadline. After that deadline, you may not be able to withdraw.
