When a company uses OKX to hold crypto, the core bookkeeping issues are the accounting measurement basis and the completeness of the supporting records. OKX itself does not provide financial statements that comply with accounting standards. It only offers statement exports and tax forms. You need to decide whether the crypto should be recorded as an intangible asset or a trading financial asset. The funding statements and account statements exported from OKX are your original booking records, but for an audit you will also need to add on-chain records and internal decision documents.

Measurement basis: first decide the holding purpose, then choose the account
There is no dedicated accounting standard for crypto. In practice, the treatment depends on the holding purpose.
If the crypto is held for the long term and not intended for short-term sale, record it as an intangible asset. Measure it initially at cost. Do not amortize it later, and do not recognize fair value changes. In September 2026, Zhidu Co. clearly told investors that the company records Bitcoin as an intangible asset and measures it initially at cost. The advantage of this approach is that the income statement stays clean: price changes do not affect current profit or loss. The downside is that if the price falls sharply, the book value may be overstated, and auditors may require an impairment charge.
If the crypto is held mainly for short-term trading gains, record it as a trading financial asset. Measure it at fair value, with changes recognized in current profit or loss. This treatment directly affects the income statement: price swings will show up in net profit. There is only one test: did the company buy the crypto to use it, or to sell it?
The logic under IFRS is similar. In its 2019 agenda decision, the IFRS Interpretations Committee concluded that crypto meets the definition of an intangible asset. However, if it is held for sale in the ordinary course of business, inventory standards under IAS 2 apply. FASB went further in ASU 2023-08, issued in 2023, requiring eligible crypto assets to be measured at fair value with changes recognized in net income. That applies to fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2024.
Selection advice: If your company holds crypto on OKX only for long-term allocation or strategic reserves, intangible assets plus the cost method is the simplest choice and causes the least income statement volatility. If you have a dedicated trading team actively trading on OKX, or if the holding purpose is to sell for profit, trading financial assets better reflect the economic substance, but you must accept income statement volatility. You cannot mix the two methods. The same batch of crypto must use only one basis.
Supporting records: OKX statements are the starting point, not the whole picture
OKX provides four types of exportable statements. Each covers different bookkeeping needs:
| Statement type | Content | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Funding statement | Deposits, withdrawals, C2C trades, red packets, campaign rewards | Confirm asset inflows and outflows and acquisition cost |
| Trade statement | Spot, futures, and other trading records | Confirm trading gains or losses and fees |
| Account statement | Asset snapshot on a specific date | Month-end or year-end holding proof |
| Tax center | Tax forms and transaction history | Tax filing reference |
Export path: On the web platform, go to "Asset Management" and choose "Order Center" or "My Assets." Filter the date range and export. Funding statements can be queried back to February 2021. Account statements can be downloaded for custom dates covering roughly the past two years. The app only supports the past 12 months.
Key reminder: OKX statements are exchange-level records. They record changes in the numbers inside your account, not the actual movement of assets on-chain. If the company uses its OKX account to receive or pay for goods or services, the "deposit" and "withdrawal" entries in the statement only prove when and how much entered or left the exchange account. They cannot by themselves prove the on-chain source and destination of the crypto.
During an audit, the materials usually needed include: on-chain transaction hashes (TXIDs), internal approval records showing who decided to buy, why, and for how much, business contracts if the crypto acquisition is related to business activities, and month-end fair value screenshots if fair value measurement is used. The TXID field in OKX statements is the bridge connecting exchange records and on-chain records.
Time zone issue: OKX tax reports uniformly use UTC time. A trade made late at night on December 31 local time may appear in OKX's UTC records as January 1 of the next year. Pay attention to this difference when booking so that cross-year transactions are assigned to the correct period.
Disclosure: what is recorded must be explained in the financial statements
Whether you use intangible assets or trading financial assets, disclosure is required.
Disclosure requirements under IFRS include: under IAS 38, disclose the carrying amount, amortization method, and impairment of intangible assets. If fair value measurement is used, follow the fair value disclosure requirements of IFRS 13. FASB's ASU 2023-08 requires disclosure of significant holdings, contractual sale restrictions, and changes during the reporting period.
In practice, a company should at least explain in the notes to the financial statements: the type and quantity of crypto held, the accounting policy choice (intangible asset or trading financial asset), the measurement method (cost or fair value), and, if fair value is used, the source of valuation, such as the OKX closing price at a specific time.
If the holding is large, auditors may require third-party proof of the holding amount. An OKX account statement can prove how much you held at a point in time, but auditors may also ask you to confirm whether those assets are subject to any pledge, lending, or freezing arrangements.
Tax: correct bookkeeping does not always mean the same tax treatment
Accounting and tax follow two different sets of logic. If crypto is recorded as a trading financial asset, fair value changes during the holding period affect accounting profit or loss. But for tax purposes, the mainstream view still follows the "realization principle": taxable income is recognized only when the crypto is actually sold, exchanged, or used for payment.
This means you may face a situation where accounting profit increases but no tax is due, or accounting profit does not change but the tax burden appears all at once when the asset is disposed of. When keeping the books, you need to make tax adjustments between the financial statements and the tax return.
VAT treatment is even more disputed. Some believe that using crypto in exchange for goods or services should be treated as a sale, with sales revenue recognized at fair value. Others believe that crypto-to-crypto exchanges are not subject to VAT. Different tax authorities may take different positions, so in practice you should confirm with a local tax advisor.
Starting in 2025, OKX reports total transaction proceeds to U.S. users on Form 1099-DA. Starting in 2026, it reports cost basis for "covered securities." If you are not a U.S. taxpayer, this form does not directly apply to you, but it shows that exchange-level tax reporting is tightening, and other jurisdictions may follow in the future.
Completion standard
The account can be considered fully booked when you can clearly explain in the financial statements: how much the company holds, at what price it was recorded, why that account was chosen, what was disclosed in the notes, and whether there are any unrecognized deferred tax effects. OKX statements can support "how much is held" and "inflow and outflow records," but "why this account was chosen" and "how fair value was determined" need to be written clearly in your own accounting policy documents.
If an auditor asks, "What is the on-chain source and destination of this crypto?" and you only have OKX statements without on-chain TXIDs and business contracts, your answer is incomplete.
