You do not need to buy AXS before playing Axie Origins. Origins has a free entry option. You can use the starter Axies given by the system to jump straight into ranked matches and seasons. AXS is an optional advanced asset in this process, not an entry ticket.

However, if you plan to move from a free player to someone with on-chain assets, you need to understand one change in 2026: season rewards no longer pay out AXS. They now pay out bAXS.
How far can you go for free
Axie Origins is a turn-based card battle game. PvP ranked play and seasonal competition are the core gameplay. Free players receive starter Axies assigned by the system. You do not need to hold any NFT to enter battles and experience the full mechanics.
Free accounts can play ranked matches, join seasons, and accumulate Axie Score, which is a reputation metric. But when it comes to reward settlement, things are different.
Season rewards are bAXS, not AXS
Starting from Origins S16, all season rewards are paid in bAXS (Bonded AXS). This is not simply a rename of AXS. It is a new token design.
The core features of bAXS: non-transferable and backed 1:1 by AXS. It can be used to breed, evolve, and upgrade Axies. It can also be staked. But it cannot be transferred directly to another wallet or sold on an exchange.
If you want to convert it into freely tradable AXS, you need to pay a Treasury fee. The rate depends on your Axie Score. Long-term players with high reputation pay lower fees. Accounts that farm rewards quickly and leave pay higher fees.
The purpose of this design is direct: reduce the selling pressure from the play-to-earn cycle and keep reward value circulating inside the ecosystem.
So even if you rank high in Origins and receive season rewards, what you receive is bAXS. To cash out, you need an extra conversion step and must cover the fee.
So is AXS useful in Origins at all
Yes, but not at the starting stage.
If you decide to buy NFT Axies instead of only using free starters, you will need a Ronin wallet. NFT purchases are usually settled in USDC, RON, WETH, or AXS. AXS is one of the assets in the Ronin ecosystem and can be used to buy Axies and items such as Keys, Runes, and Charms.
AXS is also a governance and staking token. Holding AXS lets you participate in governance votes and stake to earn rewards from the Community Treasury. But none of this affects whether you can play Origins.
OKX user path
If you decide to buy AXS or prepare funds for a Ronin wallet, OKX is a usable entry point.
OKX lists AXS spot trading, with the main trading pair being AXS/USDT. You can complete the purchase on the OKX app or website: register, complete identity verification, deposit funds through C2C or bank transfer, and then buy AXS on the spot market.
After buying, if you want to use AXS in the Axie ecosystem, you need to withdraw to a Ronin wallet. Ronin is a sidechain or network built by Sky Mavis specifically for the Axie ecosystem. Axie NFTs and assets run on it. When withdrawing, select Ronin as the receiving network and enter your Ronin wallet address.
One thing to check here: whether OKX supports direct withdrawal to the Ronin network. If you cannot find the Ronin option on the withdrawal page, you may need to withdraw to an Ethereum address first and then use a cross-chain bridge to move funds to Ronin. The specific networks supported depend on what is actually shown on the OKX withdrawal page. They may vary by region and account status.
A more recommended path: if you only want to try Origins first, do not rush to buy AXS. Play a few seasons with free starter Axies and figure out whether you really want to go deeper into the ecosystem. When you are sure you want to buy NFT Axies or join on-chain activities, then prepare AXS or a Ronin wallet. The free entry itself does not require any on-chain assets.
One risk to keep in mind
NFT Axies and AXS are market-based assets, so prices can fluctuate. Although bAXS is backed 1:1 by AXS, it is not transferable. You cannot sell bAXS on the market. Its value can only be realized in two ways: spend it inside the ecosystem, or pay a Treasury fee to convert it into AXS and then sell.
If you treat playing Origins for rewards as a source of income, you need to understand that season rewards are gated by ranking. For example, in S16 only the top 2,000 players shared the prize pool. Most ordinary players probably will not receive direct season rewards. Playing for free is possible, but earning stable withdrawals from free play is another matter.
