Buying SC on Binance and renting out hard drives are two separate things. Binance is only an entry point for buying coins. Renting out hard drives requires you to run Sia's hostd software on your own computer. There is no direct "one-click rental" feature between the two.

More importantly, renting out hard drives on Sia is not passive income. You need to stay online 24/7, lock collateral, and accept the risk of losing data. Income is also priced in SC, and the current SC price is around $0.001. Before investing in hardware, do the math first.
What to Do After Buying SC on Binance
After buying SC on the Binance spot market, you need to withdraw SC to your own Sia wallet. The hostd software used for renting out hard drives will generate a wallet address. When withdrawing, choose the Sia mainnet and transfer SC to that address.
The host wallet needs enough SC for two purposes: locking collateral and paying transaction fees for storage proofs. The official recommendation is to start with at least about $50 worth of SC.
Actual Requirements for Renting Out Hard Drives
The hardware requirements listed in Sia's official documentation are:
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| CPU | Quad-core |
| Memory | 8 GB |
| SSD (system/database) | 256 GB |
| Storage hard drive | At least 4 TB |
| Network | Stable, online 24/7 |
4 TB is the minimum threshold. Below that, it is very hard to receive contracts. The official documentation also recommends reserving extra space for the database: for every 1 TB of hosted data, you need about 10 GB of SSD space.
Costs Are Not Just Hardware
Besides hard drives and electricity, you have several ongoing capital costs:
Collateral. You need to lock SC as collateral in every storage contract. If you stay offline for too long or lose a renter's data, the collateral will be forfeited and burned. The official recommendation is to set collateral at 2-3 times your storage price.
Siafund fees. When each contract settles, a 3.9% fee is deducted from your income and collateral together.
Transaction fees. A host needs SC balance in its wallet to submit storage proofs during the proof window. If the wallet balance is not enough to pay transaction fees, you will miss the proof window and lose both collateral and income.
Uptime Is the Biggest Hidden Cost
Sia is extremely strict about host uptime. The allowed downtime per month is only about 14 hours, which means you need 98% uptime to avoid score penalties.
The impact of uptime on scoring is cliff-like: 95% uptime deducts 10% of your score, 90% deducts 50%, 85% deducts 85%, and below 80% deducts 97%. The official documentation says directly: "If you cannot maintain at least 95% uptime, do not become a host."
This means you need a machine that is always on and always connected, plus stable electricity. Laptops, intermittent disconnections from home WiFi, or situations where you travel and shut down the computer are not suitable for running a host.
How Income Is Settled
Income does not arrive in real time. After a contract ends, there is a proof window during which you must submit a storage proof. After successful submission, there is a 24-hour maturity delay before income becomes spendable balance.
The settlement cycle depends on the number of contracts. If you have multiple active contracts, they expire at different times, and income arrives in batches. If you only have one contract, you need to wait until it ends to receive money.
A Realistic Assessment
Sia hard drive hosting is positioned for people with technical ability, idle hardware, stable networks, and willingness to take risks. Its income is priced in SC, and the SC price has fallen from its 2018 high of $0.11 to about $0.001 now, a drop of more than 99%. Even if you successfully operate a host, the dollar value of your income may be far lower than expected.
If you just want to try, a more practical path is: do not buy hard drives first. Run the hostd software on your existing machine, stake a small amount of SC, and observe for a while whether renters sign contracts. A 4 TB hard drive and ongoing electricity costs are real investments, while when and how many contracts arrive is something you cannot control.
If you have already bought SC and do not want to run a host for now, SC can be traded or sold normally on Binance. During Sia network upgrades and hard forks, deposits and withdrawals may be paused for up to two weeks, but trading is not affected.
