Bottom line first: If you entered the wrong country when opening your account, you can change it, but only before you submit KYC verification. Once KYC is approved, changing it becomes much harder. You may need to complete the full identity verification again.

Many people think "just pick one for now, I can change it later"—but when they reach KYC verification, they find that the system matches verification rules based on the residence country you first selected. If that step is wrong, it causes many problems later.

Where to check? The entry before submission

This entry is in the first step of the KYC process, and it is often the most overlooked.

Web path: Log in to the OKX website → top right [Profile] → [Identity Verification] → start Level 1 verification → the first field on the page is "Country/Region".

App path: Log in to the OKX App → top left [Account Center] → [Avatar] → [Profile] → [Identity Verification] → [Verify Now].

At this step, the system usually shows a default region (for example, Mainland China). Before submitting, you must confirm that this field shows the country/region where you actually live and have valid proof of identity. Once you click "Submit", this field is locked and cannot be changed directly in place.

Already submitted? Can you still change it?

There are two situations:

Case A: KYC has not been approved yet (still under review, or you have not reached face verification)

  • In some cases, if your residence country is wrong but you have not completed the full verification, you can use the "Re-verify" process to overwrite the previous choice.

  • Specific path: Go to [Identity Verification] → click "Modify Verification" or "Re-verify" → follow the prompts to select the correct country/region and submit your documents.

Case B: KYC has already been approved

  • You cannot change the original field directly. You must use the "Re-verify" process, upload new proof of identity and proof of address documents, and wait for manual review. After approval, the new information will overwrite the old information.

  • If the system warns about "access from a different location" and you choose "I have moved to another country", the system will also guide you into the process for updating your residence country.

High risk warning: If you change your residence country after KYC approval, the system may treat it as a "cross-jurisdiction change". You may need to submit proof of residential address from within the last three months (utility bill, bank statement, etc.). Your account functions may also be limited during the review. If your documents are not real or you change them often, your verification may be rejected, or your account may be locked by risk control.

Completion standards

  • Before KYC approval: The [Identity Verification] page shows the status as "Under review", or after you change it yourself, the system has saved the new region.

  • Re-verification after KYC approval: After submitting new proof of address and face verification, the [Identity Verification] page shows "Approved", and the residence country shows the new country/region.

Common pitfalls

  1. You selected country A for residence, but your ID document was issued by country B—the system checks your document by country A's rules, so it will most likely be rejected.

  2. The proof of address you submitted does not match the residence country in the system—for example, you selected Singapore but submitted a Mainland China utility bill. The review will not pass.

  3. Switching IP addresses frequently when logging in—this may trigger the "access from a different location" risk control before you even make changes, locking your account and requiring extra verification.
