Use OKX Position Builder to Estimate Margin Before Opening a Position

Before opening a position, the most important thing to understand about using the OKX Position Builder to estimate margin is this: it mainly serves simulations under the Portfolio Margin mode, especially for scenarios involving options, multi-leg strategies, or hedging between spot and derivatives. If your account uses the standard single-currency or multi-currency margin mode, the Position Builder offers limited extra information. In that case, it is more straightforward to check the estimated margin shown directly on the order page.

What the Position Builder Actually Calculates

The OKX Position Builder is embedded within the portfolio margin system. According to official documentation, it allows you to simulate new positions and see how these simulated positions affect Initial Margin (IMR) and Maintenance Margin (MMR). You can also combine existing positions with simulated ones to observe margin changes at the portfolio level.

Its calculation logic is not a simple formula of "position value ÷ leverage". Portfolio margin mode merges perpetuals, futures, options, and spot for the same underlying asset into risk units, then simulates maximum losses under specific market conditions to derive MMR. In other words, the builder runs a stress test model rather than applying a linear formula. This is why it has real value for hedged portfolios (such as holding spot while shorting a perpetual, or option spreads). For a one-sided naked position, you can estimate the margin roughly with a normal calculator.

Entry Point and Prerequisites

The Position Builder is not a standalone menu item. It appears on pages related to Portfolio Margin account mode, usually associated with the RFQ (Request for Quote) builder or position management interface. If you cannot find the words "Position Builder" in the OKX contract trading interface, first confirm two things:

Whether your account mode supports it. Portfolio margin mode has entry requirements, which may vary by region and time. Some documents mention needing at least 10,000 USD in net assets and declaring that you understand the mode, while others mention user tier requirements. The actual ability to switch or enable it in your account is the final standard. If your account is currently in a standard mode, the Position Builder entry will not appear.

Whether you need the builder or just a regular calculator. The OKX trading interface includes a % calculator for calculating required margin, profit and loss, and estimated liquidation price. That calculator uses the leverage, entry price, and quantity you enter, with simple and direct logic, suitable for quick estimates before opening a single perpetual contract. The Position Builder is a different tool, designed for portfolio and hedging scenarios.

What to Check When Using the Builder

If you have opened the Position Builder in portfolio margin mode and simulated one or more positions, focus on two numbers:

IMR (Initial Margin): The funds required to open the position. In portfolio margin mode, IMR is derived from MMR (the relationship given in documentation is IMR = 1.3 × Derivatives MMR + Borrowing IMR). This means the initial margin you see is not a fixed percentage but changes with the risk profile of the portfolio.

MMR (Maintenance Margin): The minimum requirement to keep the position from being liquidated. Hover over MMR and the system will show a breakdown based on market risk. This breakdown is more useful than a single total—you can see which risk factor drives the margin requirement, such as spot price shock, basis risk, or time decay in options.

The simulation result in the builder does not equal the actual margin occupied after opening the position. The simulation uses the price and quantity you enter. Actual fill price, slippage, and changes in market depth will cause the real margin to deviate from the estimated value. Treat it as a boundary estimate, not an exact promise.

If You Are Just Opening a Standard Perpetual Contract

You do not need to bother with the Position Builder. The order panel itself displays the estimated initial margin and maintenance margin, and the % calculator next to it can quickly verify based on your leverage and quantity. What really affects your safety after opening is the choice between cross margin and isolated margin, and how much available balance you actually have in your account, not the simulated number produced by the builder.

The value of the Position Builder lies in multi-leg and hedged positions: if you want to simultaneously hedge spot and perpetuals, or use option combinations to control risk, the standard order page cannot show portfolio-level margin benefits, but the builder can. For a single naked position, using it gives you a low return on your time.
