How to Handle Failed Portfolio Margin Mode Switches on OKX

The most common reason a portfolio margin mode switch fails is that your account holds isolated margin positions or open orders — OKX no longer supports isolated margin trading under portfolio margin mode. Other possible causes include account equity falling below the required threshold, or failing the maintenance margin rate check under the new rules.

Below are the specific troubleshooting steps and solutions.

Prerequisites

1. You are currently operating in a "Portfolio Margin Account" under "Advanced Mode".

2. You are attempting to switch to a different account mode but the page shows a failure message.

3. You are aware of your current positions and open orders.

Step 1: Check for isolated margin positions or open orders

This is the most direct cause of a portfolio margin mode switch failure.

Scenario A: You hold isolated margin positions under portfolio margin mode

Since July 30, 2025, OKX no longer supports isolated margin trading under cross-currency margin or portfolio margin account modes.

If you hold isolated margin positions under portfolio margin mode:

• You can continue closing them, but cannot open new isolated margin positions.

• When switching account modes, the system will block the switch unless you close these positions first.

Scenario B: You have open isolated margin orders under portfolio margin mode

• The system will automatically cancel the relevant orders, but the switch may still fail as a result.

• If you have unfilled isolated margin orders, the switch may be rejected by the system or processed automatically.

Completion standard: Go to the Positions and Open Orders pages and confirm there are no isolated margin positions or orders. If any exist, close positions or cancel orders before trying again.

Step 2: Check whether account equity meets the minimum requirement

Switching to portfolio margin mode has a clear asset threshold.

If your switch to portfolio margin mode fails, it may be due to equity below 10,000 USD, or not passing the quiz. Conversely, if switching from portfolio margin to another mode fails, it is usually not due to an equity threshold, but other reasons.

Completion standard: On the Assets page confirm your total account equity. If it is below 10,000 USD you cannot switch to portfolio margin mode. If you need to switch out of portfolio margin mode, skip this step.

Step 3: Confirm whether the target mode involves "isolated margin position migration"

If your portfolio margin account holds isolated margin positions and you attempt to switch to a non-portfolio margin mode, the system may require you to handle these positions first.

According to OKX's October 2025 announcement, portfolio margin mode no longer supports isolated margin trading. For users still holding isolated margin positions, OKX will migrate the relevant positions to a new sub-account named "IsolatedMarginMigration", which is a contract mode sub-account. This means:

• If you refuse migration or migration is incomplete, the mode switch may fail.

• It is advisable to first check whether your isolated margin positions have already been migrated.

Completion standard: Check whether the "IsolatedMarginMigration" sub-account exists, or confirm there are no isolated margin positions under the portfolio margin account.

Step 4: Check the margin rate verification when "switching mode with positions"

If you hold other types of positions (non-isolated margin) during the switch, the system will verify whether your assets are sufficient to prevent liquidation of positions and assets after the mode switch.

Reasons verification may fail:

• The margin calculation rules in the new mode are different, resulting in a higher maintenance margin requirement.

• Your assets, when converted to USD, are insufficient to support existing positions after the switch.

• The unique "risk unit hedging" advantage of portfolio margin mode disappears after switching, causing the margin requirement to increase.

Completion standard: Check the specific failure reason displayed on the switch page. If it is a margin rate check failure, you need to add margin or close part of your positions before trying again.

Around the end of 2024, OKX launched the feature allowing users to switch account modes while holding positions, so you don't need to close positions to switch. However, this feature does not apply to isolated margin positions under portfolio margin mode — it has been restricted by subsequent policy. If you assume "as long as I have positions I can switch", you may fall into this trap.

Risk reminders

• Operations may change after isolated margin positions are migrated to the sub-account: The migrated "IsolatedMarginMigration" sub-account is in contract mode, and the trading experience is similar to, but not exactly the same as, portfolio margin mode. Confirm you accept this change before switching.

• Forced position reduction risk: The margin calculation rules after the switch may significantly change your margin ratio. If the margin ratio approaches or falls below 100% after switching, the system may trigger a forced reduction process.

• Cross-currency margin mode is also restricted: Neither portfolio margin mode nor cross-currency margin mode supports isolated margin trading anymore.

How to confirm a successful switch

After completing the switch, go to Settings → Account Mode and confirm that the displayed account mode has been updated to your target mode. Also check the Assets page to see whether "Available Margin" and "Maintenance Margin Rate" have returned to normal values.

If the switch fails and the page shows a specific error code (e.g., 50072), you can refer to the error code message to address the issue — error 50072 means "The isolated margin mode for cross-currency margin and portfolio margin accounts has been discontinued."
