The bottom line: maker orders are cheaper than taker orders, and the gap is quite large. For OKX futures trading, the maker fee is only about 40% of the taker fee.

First, understand the difference between maker and taker
Different order types come with different fees:
Maker order: You place a limit order that goes on the order book and waits for someone else to fill it. Your order adds liquidity, so the platform gives you a lower fee.
Taker order: You use a market order or a limit order that immediately matches an existing order on the book. You take liquidity, so you pay a higher fee.
Easy way to remember: a maker "waits for others to trade," a taker "chases the trade."
Standard user first-trade fees
Here are the standard fees for regular OKX users:
| Market | Maker fee | Taker fee |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | 0.08% | 0.10% |
| Futures | 0.02% | 0.05% |
For futures, maker orders are 0.03 percentage points cheaper than taker orders. Let's do the math: you open a futures position with a notional value of 10,000 USDT:
Maker fee: 10,000 × 0.02% = 2 USDT
Taker fee: 10,000 × 0.05% = 5 USDT
A single position open already costs 3 USDT more with a taker order.
Spot market gap is smaller, but still exists
The spot market gap is not as large, but maker orders are still 0.02 percentage points cheaper than taker orders. If your trading volume is small, this difference may not feel very obvious.
How to save on fees
Use limit orders instead of market orders in futures when you can. If your limit order is not filled immediately, it becomes a maker order and gets the maker fee.
Watch the funding rate. Futures also have a funding fee settled every 8 hours between longs and shorts. If you hold a position overnight, this cost must also be included in your total cost.
VIP levels save you more. If your account assets reach 100,000 USD or more, or your 30-day trading volume is high enough, you can upgrade to VIP and reduce fees further.

How to check after you trade
After placing an order, go to [Order History] and check the fee charged for that trade. Use the formula above to calculate the maker and taker fees. If the actual fee matches your expectation, your understanding is correct. If the fee is higher than expected, go back and check whether you placed a limit order or a market order.
