Do You Need to Buy LPT for Livepeer Streaming? An OKX User Guide

No. Livepeer separates payment and staking into two different assets: as a user of the streaming service, you pay ETH for transcoding and AI processing fees; LPT is the asset that node operators and delegators use for staking, maintaining network security, and participating in governance. Buying LPT is not a prerequisite for using Livepeer streaming features.

Why the "you need to buy LPT" misunderstanding exists

Livepeer's economic model has two parallel value flows, and they converge at the Orchestrator (node operator) level:

ETH flow: the payment layer. The Gateway (the entry point you use as a streamer to access the network) pays ETH to Orchestrators to buy computing services for video transcoding and AI inference. The Gateway itself does not need to stake LPT; it only needs ETH to cover work costs.

LPT flow: the security layer. Orchestrators need to stake LPT to qualify for task assignment. The staked amount affects the probability of being selected to process work. Delegators can delegate LPT to Orchestrators and share network rewards, but they do not directly participate in transcoding.

These two flows are deliberately separated: service buyers should not be forced to hold and hedge a protocol token; they only need to pay with ETH. Node operators, on the other hand, need "skin in the game," so LPT staking carries the security and governance weight.

What you actually need to prepare if you just want to stream

The entry point for Livepeer streaming is Livepeer Studio (or accessing the network through Gateway software). After creating a live stream with Livepeer Studio, you will get an RTMP ingest URL and a stream key. Enter them into OBS or another streaming software's "custom streaming server" settings, and you can start streaming.

Fees are settled in ETH or fiat currency, not LPT. Livepeer Studio's pricing page lists the costs of different plans, and you pay according to the plan you choose. Throughout the entire process, you do not need to touch any LPT.

When do you actually need to buy LPT

LPT only becomes relevant when you choose to become a network participant:

As a Delegator: If you simply want to earn network rewards by staking LPT, you can delegate LPT to an Orchestrator and share ETH fees and LPT inflation rewards proportionally. OKX's Earn page offers LPT staking products, with the platform handling the technical process. This has nothing to do with whether you stream; it is an independent earning activity.

As an Orchestrator (node operator): You need to run your own node, provide GPU computing power, and stake LPT to qualify for task assignment. This requires technical operations capability and is not a choice for ordinary streaming users.

If you buy LPT on OKX, what should you do with it

If you hold LPT on OKX for staking or investment purposes, it will not automatically participate in the Livepeer network. You need to withdraw LPT from the exchange to your own wallet, and then perform a bond operation through the Livepeer Explorer, or delegate it to an Orchestrator.

An easily overlooked fact: If you keep LPT on an exchange without staking it, each round of inflation issuance will dilute your share of holdings, because new LPT is only distributed to active stakers. This is a cost LPT holders need to face, and it has nothing to do with using the streaming service.

Streaming is streaming, and staking is staking. Livepeer's design makes the two non-compulsory for each other: you pay ETH to use the service, and you only touch LPT if you want to earn rewards.
