Choosing between OKX and Kraken for earning crypto in Europe depends on which coins you hold. If you hold coins like ATOM or TON, OKX currently offers noticeably higher rates. If you value broader coin coverage and clearer product categories, Kraken is the better fit. However, under the MiCA framework, neither platform's earning products are covered by deposit insurance. Rates are floating on both sides, so you should never treat advertised annual yields as fixed returns.

First, Look at the Data: Rate Differences for the Same Coins
StakingRewards.eu tracked data for European Economic Area (EEA) platforms in October 2026, allowing direct comparison of rates for the same assets across the two platforms.
Cosmos (ATOM): OKX's estimated annual yield is 18.81%, while Kraken's is 10.52%. OKX has a clear lead on this coin.
Solana (SOL): Kraken's listed rate is 8.00% (from the "Elsewhere" column in the StakingRewards comparison table, pointing to Nexo's 8.00%; Kraken's own SOL rate was not directly listed in that row), while OKX offers 4.77%. Kraken has the advantage on SOL.
Ethereum (ETH): OKX offers 2.22%, while Nexo provides 6.25%. Kraken's flexible ETH staking rate did not appear directly in the comparison table, but Kraken's official page confirms ETH staking support and mentions ETH restaking features.
Toncoin (TON): OKX offers 13.57%, while Finst offers 9.25%. Kraken's comparison data does not list TON.
Coverage Count: OKX has 11 earning products tracked in the EEA (9 staking, 2 lending), with a median annual yield of 4.27%. Kraken has 24 products tracked (23 staking, 1 lending), with a median annual yield of 3.38%. Kraken offers more than twice as many coin options as OKX.
This data reveals a practical choice: If the coin you want to earn with happens to be one where OKX offers higher rates, OKX is more profitable. If your coin is not among OKX's 11 listed options, then OKX has no product for you, and you'll need to use Kraken or another platform.
The Two Platforms' Earning Products Are Not Exactly the Same
Kraken's product line is clearer: The core offerings are on-chain staking and flexible/bonded earning. Flexible staking allows withdrawal at any time, but the official page clearly states that "only a portion of your assets is staked, and you receive at most 50% of the rewards for the selected staking asset." Bonded staking locks your assets for a period in exchange for higher annual yields, and unbonding requires waiting through the network's native unlock period. Kraken's rewards are paid weekly to your spot wallet and are not automatically compounded.
OKX's "Earn" is a bigger basket: Simple Earn is essentially a lending product. Rewards come from institutional borrowers and leveraged traders, so counterparty risk is the main consideration—it's not the same as on-chain staking. On-chain Earn is the actual PoS staking product. OKX has also launched liquid staking tokens in Europe called BETH and OKSOL. When you stake ETH or SOL, you receive the corresponding token, which can be used as collateral within OKX but cannot be transferred to external wallets or traded on the spot market. If you want pure on-chain staking rewards, you need to clearly distinguish whether you're buying Simple Earn or On-chain Earn on OKX.
One Shared Hard Condition: MiCA License Does Not Cover Earning Products
Both platforms hold MiCA licenses, but StakingRewards.eu clearly notes on both platforms' pages that staking and lending are not within MiCA's protection scope. This means your earning principal is not covered by deposit insurance or investor compensation schemes. If the platform fails, gets hacked, or staked validators are slashed, you bear the losses yourself. OKX's official page also states that rates are not fixed and will change with market conditions and network demand.
This doesn't mean you shouldn't choose either platform. It means you should not assume earning is safe just because the platform has a license. When you compare 18.81% and 10.52%, you are comparing two products where neither guarantees your principal.
My Assessment
If you hold coins like ATOM or TON where OKX offers significantly higher rates, and you accept OKX's product structure and risks, choose OKX. The trade-off is fewer coin options, and you need to distinguish between Simple Earn (lending) and On-chain Earn (staking). OKX's Simple Earn is essentially lending your money out to earn interest, with counterparties being borrowers on the platform—this is a different risk profile from staking directly to a blockchain network.
If your coin is not among OKX's 11 listed options, or if you prefer a platform with more transparent product logic, choose Kraken. Kraken's earning product categories are clearer, and the official explanations of the differences between on-chain staking, flexible, and bonded options are straightforward. The trade-off is that some coins have lower rates than OKX, and flexible staking only earns interest on a portion of your assets.
If you haven't decided which coin to earn with yet and just want to open an account on one of the two platforms, Kraken's 24 coin options are more practical. Among OKX's 11 coins, the high-yield ATOM and TON may not be assets you primarily hold.
What You Should Do Now
Open both platforms' earning pages and find the specific coin you actually hold. If OKX has that coin, compare the current estimated annual yield (not the historical high) on both sides, and check whether OKX is showing Simple Earn or On-chain Earn. If both platforms offer the coin and the difference is small, choose the one whose product logic you understand better. If OKX doesn't have your coin, this question doesn't exist for you.
