OKX Email Already Taken but Can't Log In? First, Confirm How It Was Registered

If your email shows as occupied but you cannot log in, first figure out how that email was used during registration. The same email might have been used to create a main account directly, or it might just be the login name for a sub-account, or it could have been linked after you logged in using another method (phone number, social account). Each of these three situations requires a different way to recover your account.

Case A: The email was used to register a main account, but the password is wrong

In this case, try logging in with the email and a few password combinations you commonly use. If you still cannot get in, simply follow the official password recovery process.

  • What to do: Enter your email on the login page and click "Forgot Password". The system will send a password reset email to your inbox. Follow the instructions in the email to reset your password and log in.

  • Success indicator: You can log in normally after resetting the password.

Case B: The email is the login name for a sub-account

This is a common pitfall. OKX allows creating independent sub-accounts with an email. A sub-account's login name can be different from the main account's login name. If you created a sub-account using that email, you cannot use that email to log into the main account directly. But the system has a record of that email, so it will say "already taken".

  • What to do: Check if the issue is a sub-account. If so, you need to log in using the main account's login method (usually a phone number or another main email). Then go to the sub-account management page and find the sub-account linked to that email.

  • Success indicator: You have located the corresponding sub-account and confirmed that its login entrance is separate from the main account.

Case C: The email is linked to another account that does not belong to you

This usually happens when the phone number or email is a recycled number – the previous owner registered and linked it to an OKX account, but you have no knowledge of it.

  • What to do: If your email can receive verification codes but the login says "account does not exist", it means the email may be linked to someone else's account. If you need to move this email to your own account, OKX has an official "account migration" feature that can transfer the occupied phone number or email to the account you are currently logged into.

  • Success indicator: After successful migration, the account that was occupying the email will be closed, and the email will be linked to your account. Note: Only accounts that have not completed identity verification can be migrated. Verified accounts cannot go through this migration process.

Common reasons for failure

  • Can't find the account with the email, but registration says it's already taken: Most likely, the email is linked but the account has not completed identity verification. The system has a record, but you might not remember the exact registration method. We suggest trying different login entry points on the login page, like "Log in with phone number" or "Log in with email", one by one.

  • Forgot which country code you used when registering: If you registered with a phone number + email combination, selecting the wrong country code will also cause an "account does not exist" error. Check whether you used +86 or another code during registration.

Risk warning: After migrating a phone number or email, withdrawals and C2C sell orders are disabled for 24 hours. If you are in urgent need of funds, make sure the migration will not disrupt your financial arrangements. Also, after migration, the old account that was migrated will be automatically closed; its assets and referral relationships will not be transferred to the new account.

After completing the steps

  • Verification: After logging in successfully, go to [Security Settings] and confirm that the currently linked phone number, email, and Google Authenticator are all under your control. If you see any unfamiliar device login records, force logout immediately.

  • Next steps: Once confirmed, we recommend double-checking your account's 2FA device (Google Authenticator) and backup email to make sure all security verification methods are in your hands. If you are certain the email belongs to you but you still cannot recover the account, you can submit a manual appeal through OKX customer support (email This email address is being protected from spambots.
