Is OKX DApp Unlimited Approval Safe? Risk Comparison Before Connecting

Unlimited approval is like handing over a master key. It is absolutely unsafe. This is not an OKX Wallet vulnerability. It is a common problem with all EVM wallets and approval mechanisms — the problem is the word "unlimited".

Why "Unlimited Approval" Is the Biggest Security Risk

When you connect to a DApp, the wallet shows an approval request with two key details: approval amount and approval target (spender address). If the amount shows "Unlimited" or a very long number, it means you allow the DApp to call any amount of a token from your wallet again and again, until you revoke it manually.

If the spender is a malicious contract or gets hacked, the other party can use the transferFrom function to move all of that token out of your account. Past cases show that OKX's DEX market maker contract had admin permissions stolen, causing losses for users who had approved the contract earlier but did not revoke in time.

There is another hidden risk: EIP-7702 approval signatures. You may see a signature request that looks like a normal login check. If you confirm without reading carefully, you may actually be allowing malicious code to operate your wallet. Public data shows that as of June 2025, out of about 79,000 EIP-7702 approval transactions, over 97% went to the same malicious contract.

What OKX Wallet Risk Controls Can and Cannot Do

OKX Wallet has security mechanisms to help you avoid some pitfalls:

What it does:

  • Triggers an approval warning for DApps not used for 30 days, reminding you to manage old approvals

  • Shows alerts or even blocks transactions when blacklisted addresses or contracts are detected

  • Warns when approving an EOA account (a normal wallet address instead of a contract address)

What it does not do:

  • Judge whether "this DApp will rug pull tomorrow"

  • Revoke approved amounts for you — you must do that yourself

Risk control is only a helper. It is not responsible for your decisions. When you click "Confirm approval", the decision is in your hands.

Three Golden Rules for Safe Approvals

  1. Choose a custom limit when approving: If the DApp supports it, do not choose "Unlimited". Manually enter the exact amount needed for this transaction. Give only enough permission.

  2. Revoke after use: After the transaction, revoke the approval right away. Use tools like Revoke.cash regularly to check and remove unnecessary approvals.

  3. Do not sign transactions you do not understand: If the signature request contains characters you cannot understand, or the other party says it is for "claiming an airdrop" or "verifying identity", do not sign. Many phishing attacks trick users into signing malicious signatures to steal assets.

How to Check After Approving

After approval, go to the OKX Wallet approval management page (or use tools like Revoke.cash) to view the approval list. Confirm that the amount you just approved is not "Unlimited" and that you know how to revoke it. If you find an earlier approval set to unlimited, revoke it immediately and approve again with a limited amount.
