When buying TRX on Binance to transfer USDT, you do not need to hold a large amount of TRX in advance. Based on current network parameters, if the receiving address already holds USDT, one TRC-20 transfer uses about 6.4–6.9 TRX. If you are sending to a brand new address that has never received USDT, the cost doubles to about 13.4 TRX. Binance charges a fixed 1.5 USDT fee for TRC-20 USDT withdrawals. This fee is deducted by the platform, so you do not need extra TRX to pay it.

What Is Actually Consumed On-Chain
The TRON network does not directly charge TRX as a "fee". Each transaction uses two resources: bandwidth and energy. Bandwidth covers the data size of the transaction, and energy covers the execution of smart contracts.
A normal TRX transfer only uses bandwidth. Each account gets 600 free bandwidth per day, enough for about two transfers. But a TRC-20 USDT transfer uses both bandwidth and energy. Energy has no free allowance, so you must get it by staking TRX or by burning TRX to "buy" energy.
Under current mainnet parameters, the price of burning TRX for energy is 1 Energy = 100 SUN = 0.0001 TRX. A transfer to an existing USDT address uses about 65,000 energy, which equals 6.5 TRX. If the address is new, it needs to create a storage slot, so energy use jumps to about 131,000, equal to 13.1 TRX. Add bandwidth cost of about 0.345 TRX on top.
So the answer to "how much TRX to buy" depends on your transfer target: prepare about 7 TRX for an old address, and about 14 TRX for a new address. This gives your wallet enough TRX to burn to cover the resource gap.
What Binance Actually Deducts During Withdrawal
There is a common point of confusion here. When you withdraw TRC-20 USDT on Binance, the 1.5 USDT fee is a platform fee. It is deducted directly from your USDT balance and does not involve TRX.
Binance's withdrawal flow works like this: you enter the address and amount, the platform broadcasts the transaction on-chain, and Binance covers the TRON resource cost. You do not need to hold TRX in your Binance account to "pay gas". So when withdrawing USDT from Binance, you actually do not need to prepare TRX at all.
The real scenario where you need your own TRX is: when you use a self-custody wallet like imToken or TokenPocket to send USDT from your own TRON address. In that case, your address pays for energy and bandwidth. If your address does not have staked TRX or enough TRX balance, the transfer will fail, and the TRX burned in the failed transaction will not be refunded.
If You Really Need to Buy TRX
The rule is simple: if your USDT is in your Binance account, just withdraw it directly. You do not need to buy TRX. If your USDT is in your own on-chain wallet, make sure the wallet address has enough TRX before sending.
If you need to prepare TRX for a self-custody wallet, buy TRX on the Binance spot market and then withdraw it to your TRON address. Withdrawing TRX itself only uses bandwidth. Your destination address has free daily bandwidth, or Binance covers the on-chain cost.
How much to buy depends on how many USDT transfers you plan to make. One transfer to an old address costs about 7 TRX. One transfer to a new address costs about 14 TRX. At the current TRX price of around $0.15, 7 TRX is just over $1, and 14 TRX is under $2.50.
An Easier Alternative Path
If you only send USDT occasionally, withdrawing directly from Binance is the easiest option. The fixed 1.5 USDT fee is simpler than managing TRX, staking, or renting energy yourself, and you do not need to manage the TRX balance in an on-chain wallet.
If you use Binance Wallet (the self-custody wallet), it now supports paying TRON network gas fees directly with USDT. You do not need to hold TRX. Go to the wallet's asset page, select Send USDT, and choose USDT as the network fee payment method. TRON network also has a promotion right now. Eligible users may enjoy zero gas fees before December 22, 2026.
