Before you quit copy trading, ask yourself one question: Did you follow this trader because of their skills, or were you just swept up by market hype? Once you figure this out, you'll know whether to keep your positions or close them all.

Step 1: Before Stopping, Evaluate Your Current Positions

After you stop copy trading, you won't follow any new trades from the lead trader, but your existing positions won't disappear automatically. You need to decide what to do with them yourself.

  • Case A: You believe in the current position direction — For example, you agreed with the trade when the lead trader opened it, you just don't want to follow their new trades anymore. In this case, choose "Keep Positions" when stopping copy trading. These positions will stay open, and you'll manage them on your own going forward.

  • Case B: You don't agree with the current position direction, or you're unsure — For instance, you were led into the trade by the lead trader and didn't originally plan to trade in this direction. In this case, choose "Close Positions" when stopping. The system will close all your copy trading positions at market price in one go.

Common mistakes: Many people don't read the pop-up options carefully when stopping copy trading and just default to closing positions, accidentally clearing orders they wanted to keep. Or the opposite — they choose to keep positions but forget to manage them later, getting trapped when the market reverses.

Step 2: Execute the Stop — Note the Differences Between Spot and Futures

For both spot and futures copy trading on Binance, the stop function is in the same place, but the handling logic is slightly different.

How to stop copy trading:

  • Go to Copy Trading → My Portfolio, and find the project you're currently following

  • Click the "Stop Copy Trading" or "Unfollow" button

  • A pop-up window will appear asking you to choose "Keep" or "Close" your existing positions

Spot Copy Trading: After stopping, any remaining token balance in your account will be handled as follows — amounts over 10 USDT will be automatically converted to USDT and returned to your spot account, while amounts below 10 USDT will be returned as the original tokens.

Futures Copy Trading: After stopping, your positions will be handled based on your choice. If you choose to close, the system will automatically settle all copy trading positions using market orders.

High-risk warning: If you choose to "Keep Positions" after stopping copy trading, it means all subsequent stop-loss, take-profit, adding to, or reducing positions must be done manually by you. The lead trader will not continue managing them just because you kept the positions. If you don't actively monitor the market, don't choose to keep them. If the market moves against you, you'll have to bear the losses yourself.

Step 3: Auto-Closure Scenarios — Know Before It Happens

Sometimes it's not you who wants to quit — the system may close it for you. Know in advance which situations trigger auto-closure so you're not caught off guard.

Auto-closure rules on the follower's side:

  • If the margin balance of the copy trading project falls below the minimum copy amount and 5 consecutive position openings fail, the system will check daily and automatically close the project.

  • Reasons for failure include: insufficient copy trading margin, order amount smaller than the minimum opening amount, etc.

Scenarios triggered by the lead trader:

  • If the lead trading project experiences a forced liquidation and the asset balance remains at 0 for 2 consecutive days, the system will automatically end the project.

  • The lead trader disables their own copy trading feature.

How to verify the operation is complete: After stopping copy trading, go to your Spot Wallet or Futures Account to confirm the funds have been returned. If you chose to keep positions, go to the Positions page to verify the position status and quantity are correct. If you chose to close positions, check the Trade History to review the closing price and settlement amount and confirm there are no discrepancies.
