How to Handle Positions After Stopping Copy Trading on Binance

When you stop copy trading, your existing positions do not disappear. They immediately detach from the lead trader and become independent positions. You need to close them yourself, and funds will be returned to your spot account once the portfolio is closed. Here is exactly what happens to your positions and how to manage them after stopping copy trading.

Step 1: Confirm whether you are stopping "Copy Trading" or "Lead Trading"

The outcome depends entirely on your role.

Scenario A: You are a copy trader stopping a copy project

  • Your copy portfolio immediately stops syncing new trades from the lead trader.

  • Existing positions are not automatically closed. They remain in your account but no longer follow the lead trader's operations.

  • You can choose to close them immediately or hold them until a suitable moment.

Scenario B: You are a lead trader closing your lead project

  • The system automatically initiates a process: cancels all pending orders, closes all open positions, then transfers the remaining assets back to your spot wallet.

  • Low‑liquidity tokens may take longer to process.

Completion standard: clearly identify your role and the type of action.

Step 2: As a copy trader, manage open positions after stopping

After stopping copy trading, your positions become fully independent and under your own control.

How to do it:

  1. Go to the [Copy Trading] page and find the portfolio you stopped copying.

  2. Check the remaining positions in that portfolio.

  3. Manually close those positions on the [Open Orders] page, or sell directly in your [Spot Account].

  4. After closing positions, the funds remain in the copy portfolio balance. You must click [Stop Copying] on the portfolio page to automatically transfer them back to your spot wallet.

Note: If you only stop copy trading without closing the portfolio, the positions will stay open indefinitely; they will not be closed automatically.

Completion standard: all positions are closed and the copy portfolio balance is empty.

Step 3: Close the portfolio and transfer remaining funds to your spot account

Whether you are a copy trader or a lead trader, you need to close the portfolio to retrieve your funds.

Path for copy traders:

  1. On the portfolio page, select [Stop Copying].

  2. Token balances exceeding 10 USDT will be automatically converted to USDT and returned to your spot wallet.

  3. Token balances below 10 USDT will be returned to your spot wallet in the original tokens.

Path for lead traders (must clear positions proactively):

  1. Cancel all pending orders and sell all coins for USDT.

  2. Click [Close] to stop the lead portfolio.

  3. Click [Adjust Balance] – [Remove] to transfer funds back to your spot wallet.

Completion standard: funds have moved from the copy portfolio to your spot account and the balance is updated.

Step 4: Handling automatic stops due to consecutive copy failures

If a copy project fails five times in a row because of insufficient balance or order size below the minimum, the system automatically closes the copy project.

  • The system checks this every Friday.

  • If you find a portfolio has been automatically closed, simply follow the fund return logic in Step 3.

Completion standard: confirm whether the project was auto‑closed or manually closed; if auto‑closed, retrieve funds following the same process.

Common Misconception

Thinking that stopping copy trading equals automatic closing of positions

This is the most widespread misunderstanding. When a copy trader stops copying, existing positions remain in the account and must be handled manually. Automatic closing only happens when a lead trader closes their project – never on the copy trader's side.

Risk Reminders

  • Price fluctuation during holding: any profit or loss after stopping copy trading is entirely borne by you.

  • Low‑liquidity tokens may take longer: when closing a portfolio, illiquid tokens may need more time to sell, delaying the return of funds.

  • Historical data cannot be restored after stopping: once you stop simulated copy trading, the simulated trading data becomes inaccessible.

How to Verify Completion

Go to [Wallet] → [Spot Account] and check whether the funds have been transferred. If the balance from the copy portfolio has moved to your spot account and the positions page is empty, the process is complete.
