On Binance P2P, the final decision to release funds is in the seller's hands, but Binance customer support can manually release funds under certain conditions. On Hodl Hodl, the seller is the only person who can initiate a release in the normal process, but the key held by Hodl Hodl gives the platform real decision-making power in disputes. Neither platform lets one side have total control: Binance uses customer support intervention in a custodial model, while Hodl Hodl uses platform co-signing in a multisig escrow model. The difference is that Binance's intervention is manual review after the fact, while Hodl Hodl's intervention is part of the on-chain multisig mechanism.

Binance P2P: Seller Releases First, Support Backs Up
Binance P2P uses platform-controlled escrow. After the buyer pays, the cryptocurrency is locked in Binance's escrow. The seller confirms receipt of fiat and clicks to release. In the normal process, the seller decides whether to release.
But Binance's rules clearly state that customer support will manually release funds in several situations:
If the buyer pays using an instant payment method and the seller does not release within 15 minutes, support will contact the seller. If there is no response, support will manually release. For non-instant payment methods, the seller gets 2 business days. If the deadline passes and the seller does not contact support, it is treated as payment received and support releases manually.
If the buyer pays the correct amount and the payment account name matches the Binance verified name, but the seller refuses to release and wants to trade at a higher price, support will step in. Except when the price is abnormally low (more than 10% below market price), support will manually release the order.
Conversely, if the buyer did not pay but clicked "I have paid," or if the payment account name does not match verification, Binance will not release. The seller needs to refund and the order is cancelled.
There is one boundary that is easy to overlook: if the seller clicks release before confirming receipt of payment, the loss is borne by the seller. Binance explicitly states it is not responsible for such losses and does not guarantee recovery. Support can handle "seller won't release" and "buyer won't pay," but cannot handle "seller released by mistake."
So the release decision on Binance P2P can be understood this way: seller controls in normal conditions, support takes over in abnormal conditions, and seller's own mistakes are not covered.
Hodl Hodl: Seller Initiates Release, But Platform Key Gives Dispute Authority
Hodl Hodl uses a 2-of-3 multisig escrow structure. Each trade generates a unique P2SH multisig address. The three keys belong to the seller, the buyer, and the Hodl Hodl platform. Releasing funds requires two signatures.
In the normal process, the seller deposits BTC into the escrow address, the buyer sends fiat, and the seller confirms receipt and signs with their key to initiate release. The buyer also has their own key, but in the normal process the buyer cannot unilaterally take BTC from escrow. Hodl Hodl's official explanation is that the seller cannot return BTC without a second party's consent, and the buyer cannot get BTC before the contract is completed.
When a dispute arises, Hodl Hodl's key becomes truly important. Both buyer and seller can start a dispute. After Hodl Hodl administrators review it, they use the platform key plus either the buyer's or seller's key to form two signatures and release funds. This means in a dispute, Hodl Hodl can side with the buyer (platform key + buyer key) or the seller (platform key + seller key).
The key point of this design is: Hodl Hodl cannot move funds unilaterally. It must get cooperation from either the buyer or the seller to sign. But conversely, neither the buyer nor the seller can bypass Hodl Hodl to unilaterally complete or cancel a release. Can the seller release or not release as they wish? No. In a dispute, the platform can join with the buyer to release the funds. Can the buyer force a withdrawal? No. Without the seller's signature or the platform's ruling, the buyer alone cannot gather two keys.
Hodl Hodl officially describes this mechanism as "a fair resolution system that ensures no single party has unilateral control."
Key Difference: Support Discretion vs On-Chain Multisig
Putting the two side by side, the structural difference in release authority becomes clear.
| Binance P2P | Hodl Hodl | |
|---|---|---|
| Escrow method | Platform escrow, coins under Binance control | 2-of-3 multisig, coins locked in on-chain escrow address |
| Normal release | Seller clicks release | Seller signs release with their key |
| Dispute/abnormal intervention | Binance support manually reviews and releases or requests refund | Hodl Hodl uses platform key to co-sign with one party to release funds |
| Can platform move coins unilaterally | Yes, support has manual release authority in custodial model | No, platform has only one key and must join with buyer or seller |
| Responsibility for seller's mistaken release | Seller bears loss, platform does not guarantee recovery | Seller's signature is effective immediately, irreversible on-chain |
| Can buyer unilaterally take coins | No | No, needs seller's or platform's key cooperation |
Binance's release authority is essentially custodial trust: you give your coins to Binance, and Binance decides when to release. Support's manual release power is an extension of this custodial relationship. It is efficient but depends on platform judgment. Hodl Hodl's release authority is essentially mechanism-based checks and balances: no one can move coins alone, and disputes require the platform and one party to co-sign. You have stronger control over your coins, but the process is slower and dispute outcomes depend on Hodl Hodl administrators' judgment.
What This Means for Sellers
If you are a seller on Binance P2P, if you receive fiat but do not release, support may release directly. The rules give buyers a clear backup path. Your protection is that the payment account name must match verification, otherwise Binance will not release. If you release before confirming receipt, you bear the loss.
On Hodl Hodl, if you do not release, the buyer can start a dispute, and Hodl Hodl may join with the buyer to release your coins. But your protection is that the buyer cannot take coins from escrow without your signature or the platform's co-signature. After you confirm receipt and sign to release, the on-chain execution is irreversible.
What This Means for Buyers
On Binance P2P, if you paid and the seller does not release, support can manually release. But the prerequisite is that your payment account name matches Binance verification, the amount is correct, and you did not write sensitive words in the memo. If the name does not match or the amount is wrong, support will not release.
On Hodl Hodl, if you paid and the seller does not release, you can start a dispute, but the outcome is decided by Hodl Hodl administrators. Your key gives you a voice in disputes, but you cannot unilaterally take coins. Hodl Hodl's buyer guide repeatedly emphasizes: do not pay before BTC is confirmed locked in escrow, because the payment itself happens off-chain and the platform does not participate in fiat transfer.
How to Choose
If you want a process where someone is in charge when problems occur and support can force a release, Binance P2P is more direct. The cost is that you give custody of your coins to the platform, and support's judgment becomes the final decision.
If you do not want any single party to control funds unilaterally and are willing to accept a mechanism where disputes are resolved through platform co-signing, Hodl Hodl's structure is more transparent. The cost is that the process is slower, disputes do not have the speed of "support one-click release," and you need to manage your own wallet and payment passwords.
Neither platform promises "absolute fairness." Binance support's manual release is based on rules and evidence, and Hodl Hodl administrators' dispute rulings also rely on manual review. The only difference is that the former's power comes from custody, while the latter's power comes from that one key in the multisig.
