How to Handle Positions Before Stopping Binance Copy Trading? Exit Steps

Your lead trader closed a position, but your copy trade did not move. It is probably not a system error. Something in your account is blocking the copy trade. Let's troubleshoot from the most likely cause to the least likely.

Step 1: Check if your available margin is enough

Copy trade closing does not need extra money from you, but your account must have a small balance to cover fees. If your available margin is almost zero, the system may skip the copy trade.

  • [What to do]: Check the available margin balance in your Futures account.

  • [How to do it]: Open the Binance app, go to your Futures account, and look at "Available Margin". If it is close to 0 or lower than the minimum notional value for the copy trade size, the copy close likely will not trigger.

  • [Done when]: You confirm available margin is greater than 0 and above the minimum order notional value for that trading pair.

Step 2: Check if the lead trader did a "partial close"

If the lead trader only closed part of the position, your copy trade will also close proportionally, not fully. You may think nothing happened, but it actually moved a small amount you did not notice.

  • [What to do]: Check the percentage of the lead trader's close this time.

  • [How to do it]: Find the close record in the lead trader's position history. If it shows 0.2 BTC closed while the total position was 1 BTC, that is a 20% close. The system will close 20% of your position, not all of it. Check the filled quantity in your order history and compare it.

  • [Done when]: You confirm the lead trader's close ratio and the actual filled quantity in your account.

Step 3: Check if "slippage protection" blocked it

If the market moved sharply when the lead trader closed, and slippage exceeded your limit, the system may cancel the copy trade instead of forcing the order.

  • [What to do]: Check your current slippage limit setting.

  • [How to do it]: Go to the copy trading project settings and find "Slippage Protection". By default, BTCUSDT/ETHUSDT is 0.5%, and other pairs are 1.5%. If your setting is too tight, or the market suddenly gapped, the slippage may exceed the limit and the copy trade cannot follow. You can set it a little wider, but not too wide, because the fill price may be far from the lead trader's price.

  • [Done when]: You confirm the exact slippage limit and know how far it is from the default.

Step 4: Check if other open orders are taking up margin

If you have unfilled open orders in your account at the same time, the margin used by those orders reduces your available balance. This can leave the copy close without enough margin to execute.

  • [What to do]: Check the "Current Orders" list for any unfilled orders.

  • [How to do it]: Open the Futures trading page and go to "Current Orders" or "Open Orders". Look through all pending orders. If any order is using margin, cancel it first, then wait for the next copy signal.

  • [Done when]: There are no margin-using open orders stuck in the current orders list.

There is another case: if copy trading fails 5 times in a row, the project may be automatically closed by the system. If you already had several failures before, this close not moving may have triggered project closure. You will need to create a new copy trading project.

How to verify after troubleshooting

After completing the steps above, go to "Copy Trading History" or "Order History" and find the detailed record of this copy trade. Check whether the status is "Filled", "Canceled", or "Not Triggered". If it shows "Canceled", open the details. You can usually see the specific reason, such as slippage exceeding the limit. Adjust the settings based on that reason, and it will not get stuck next time.
