OKX USD-Margined Options: How to Choose the Settlement Currency?

OKX's "USD-margined options" settlement currency is not simply a preference you pick when placing an order. It is determined by your region's compliance eligibility and the account mode you actually use. For most ordinary users outside Australia and the UAE, OKX options still default to coin-margined (settled in BTC/ETH). The "USD-margined" option you see may not be available at all, or may require meeting specific regional qualifications. If you are indeed in a region that supports USD-margined options (such as wholesale clients in Australia or compliant users in the UAE), you can choose between USD, USDC, or USDG as the settlement currency. Which one is available depends on the jurisdiction of your account.

First Confirm Whether the "USD-Margined" Option You See Is Actually Available

OKX runs two sets of options products at the same time: coin-margined options and USDⓈ-margined options. Their contract codes are different. Coin-margined options use BTC/ETH as margin and settlement currency with an inverse payoff structure. USD-margined options use USD, USDC, or USDG as margin and settlement currency with a linear payoff structure.

The issue is that USD-margined options are regulated derivatives launched by OKX in specific jurisdictions. Official documentation clearly states that this product was launched "as part of our regulated derivatives services in the UAE and Australia." The Australian version is only available to wholesale clients and is denominated in USD stablecoins, not fiat USD. If your account is not registered in one of these supported regions, you may not see USD-margined options in the interface, or even if you see them, you may not be able to trade them.

How to verify: Open the OKX options trading page and check the contract name. Coin-margined contracts usually contain BTC-USD or ETH-USD. USD-margined contracts contain BTC-USD_UM or similar identifiers. If you cannot find contracts with _UM or USD-margined markers, your account currently does not have trading eligibility. In that case, discussing "which settlement currency to choose" is meaningless.

If You Are Eligible to Trade USD-Margined Options, How to Choose the Settlement Currency

In supported regions, the settlement currency for USD-margined options can be USD, USDC, or USDG, but which ones are available to you depends on your region. The official statement is that "the availability of USD, USDC, or USDG varies by region."

Factors to consider when choosing are quite specific:

USDC is the most widely circulated and accepted USD stablecoin. If you later need to transfer settlement proceeds to other platforms or use them in other DeFi scenarios, USDC has the best interoperability. In OKX's unified account, USDC can also be used as margin and settlement asset.

USDG is a stablecoin that appears in the OKX-related ecosystem. Using it within the OKX platform is fine, but if you plan to withdraw settled assets to an external wallet or another exchange, you need to first confirm whether the other party supports USDG. If you have no specific use case for USDG, choosing USDC is more prudent.

USD (fiat USD) in the Australian version is actually implemented as a USD stablecoin. The official documentation specifically notes that it is "denominated in USD stablecoins, not fiat currency" and that "there is no guarantee that the USD stablecoin will maintain a 1:1 value with USD." If you choose a settlement option displayed as "USD," what you receive is likely a stablecoin rather than USD in a bank account. You need to verify the actual currency received in your asset records.

An Easily Overlooked Prerequisite: Margin and Settlement Are the Same Set of Assets

For USD-margined options, margin, premium, profit and loss, and settlement are all denominated in USD. The USDC or USDG you deposit is used as collateral based on its USD stablecoin value. This means if you open a position using USDC as margin, the settlement profit at expiry will also be paid in the settlement currency you selected. This process does not involve the complexity of coin-margined options where "USDT is used as margin but potential BTC borrowing occurs."

In contrast, if you mistakenly think you are trading USD-margined options but actually opened a coin-margined contract, settlement will be in BTC or ETH. Even if you use USDT as margin, the trading and settlement currency of coin-margined options is still BTC/ETH. If your account does not have enough of the underlying asset, borrowing and corresponding interest may occur. Confirming the contract type is the first step. Choosing the settlement currency is the second step.

Checklist for Making Your Decision

After completing your verification, you should be able to answer: Does your OKX account registration region support USD-margined options? Are the contracts you see on the options page coin-margined or USD-margined? If USD-margined is supported, which settlement currencies are available in your account? Does the settlement currency you choose meet your needs for later withdrawal or use?

If the answer to the first question is no, the only options you can currently trade are coin-margined options, with settlement currency fixed as BTC or ETH. There is no choice to make. In that case, what you need to pay attention to is whether your account has enough of the underlying asset for settlement, rather than choosing between USD/USDC/USDG.
