Can OKX Assets Be Used as Financial Evidence for a UK Student Visa?

OKX assets cannot be used directly as financial evidence for a UK student visa. The rules from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) are very clear: funds must be held in cash form in a regulated bank account, and they must be available for withdrawal at any time. Cryptocurrency, stocks, pensions, and overdraft facilities are all outside the acceptable range.

What the Rules Actually Say

The visa guidance pages of UK universities (such as the University of Edinburgh and UCL) list a uniform set of "unacceptable" items, and cryptocurrency is explicitly excluded. The reason is not about the value of the asset, but because UKVI requires "cash funds" — money held in a savings or current account at a regulated financial institution, immediately accessible. OKX is a centralized exchange account, not a regulated bank account, and the cryptocurrency held there does not count as "cash."

The UK official requirements for how funds are held include several hard conditions: the funds must be in your name (or in the name of an eligible parent/guardian/partner); they must remain at or above the required amount for 28 consecutive days; and the date on the evidence document must be within 31 days before you submit your visa application.

What to Do If You Only Have OKX Assets

You need to sell your assets on OKX, convert them to cash, and transfer the money into a regulated bank account. Then you need to let the money sit in that bank account for a full 28 days before you can get a bank statement to use for your visa.

There is one key point about the order: the sale and transfer must happen before the 28-day holding period starts. If you only withdraw from OKX to your bank during the holding period, the 28-day "continuous holding" clock restarts from the day the funds arrive in your bank account. Any time before that does not count. UKVI looks at the balance history shown on your bank statement, not the transfer record.

Also, the amount you transfer into your bank needs to cover your tuition fees plus living costs. UKVI converts non-GBP funds into pounds sterling using the OANDA exchange rate, so if your OKX assets are denominated in USD or CNY, the converted GBP amount may fall slightly below the threshold due to exchange rate fluctuations. Leaving a 5%-10% buffer is a common practice.

When Might "Cryptocurrency Assets" Be Accepted?

Currently, UKVI's published rules do not leave any room for cryptocurrency. You may come across claims that mention "if held through a compliant custodian" or "if held in fiat form at a licensed institution" — but these approaches ultimately still require a cash balance in a bank account. In other words, no matter what steps happen in between, the visa officer will always look at that bank statement. It must show a cash figure held at a regulated bank, and that figure must have remained stable for 28 days.

If you do not plan to sell your OKX assets and transfer them into a bank, and instead want to use the exchange's asset statement directly for your application, that route is currently not available.
