If a P2P merchant urges you to cancel an order, do not rush to click "Cancel." The common trap here is that once an order is canceled, the transaction is treated as if it "never happened," and platform support will find it very hard to help you.

Risk Assessment: Why Would a Merchant Ask You to Cancel?

When a merchant asks you to cancel an order, there are usually a few possible reasons behind it:

  • The reason is "the price was wrong" or "the ad was posted incorrectly": This is the most common excuse. But the key point is that the merchant set up the ad themselves. A pricing mistake is their own error, and you should not have to bear the cost of canceling the order. If you click cancel, the transaction becomes void.

  • The reason is "payment not received" or "bank delay": In very rare cases, the merchant may genuinely have a funding problem. But if you have already clicked "I have paid" and the merchant keeps making excuses and asking you to cancel, be extra careful. The other party may be buying time to handle other matters, or even trying to make you cancel automatically so the deal is abandoned. In P2P disputes, the party who cancels the order is often at a disadvantage. Once you cancel voluntarily, it becomes very difficult to appeal to the platform later for "malicious delay" or "fraud," because the order no longer exists.

  • They may later trade at the "market price": If you cancel the order, the merchant can post a new ad and likely sell to you at a higher price than before. This is one of the most common ways for merchants to recover their losses, and you end up paying the price difference.

What Should You Do? Follow Platform Rules and Do Not Cancel Easily

If the merchant asks you to cancel, do not agree directly. Instead, follow the platform process:

  1. Do not click "Cancel order" on your own: As long as you have not canceled, the order is still in a "pending" state. This is your only proof for filing a platform appeal.

  2. Clearly state your position in the chat window: Reply to the merchant in the P2P chat window: "I have completed payment as required by the order (or: I have not yet paid). Please handle this according to platform rules. If the trade cannot be completed, please initiate the cancellation from your side. I will not cancel on my own." This helps preserve evidence and prevents you from losing your appeal rights due to a misoperation.

  3. Contact official customer support: If the merchant insists on cancellation, contact OKX human customer support first and explain the situation. Platform support can step in to mediate, or tell you whether the merchant's current reputation rating is abnormal. Before the dispute is resolved, do not easily click "Cancel" or "Confirm receipt" on your own.

Risk warning: If you have already paid and the merchant asks you to cancel, never click cancel. That would mean you paid the money but the order is voided. The other party does not need to release the crypto, and you can only try to recover your funds through third-party channels. This is one of the most serious risks in P2P trading.
