The close position logic in one-way mode and hedge mode is completely different. In one-way mode, opening a reverse order directly closes your existing position. In hedge mode, you can hold both long and short positions on the same contract at the same time, independently, and you need to manually choose which side to close.
Step 1: Confirm which position mode you are using
[What to do] Check and confirm the current position mode setting.
[How to do it] Go to the futures trading page (perpetual or delivery), click the 【···】 icon in the top-right corner → 【Trading Settings】 → 【Position Mode】. The page will display whether you are currently using "One-Way Mode" or "Hedge Mode".
The prerequisite for switching to hedge mode is that you have no open positions or pending orders; otherwise, the system will prompt you to clear your positions first. After switching, your USDT-margined and coin-margined contracts will share the same position mode setting.
[Completion standard] You clearly know whether you are in "One-Way" or "Hedge" mode.
Step 2: Close position logic in One-Way Mode
[What to do] Understand the rule that "opening a reverse order = closing a position" in one-way mode.
[How to do it] In one-way mode, you can only hold a position in one direction at a time. If you hold a long position on a BTCUSDT perpetual contract and then open a short order for the same contract, the system will directly close your current long position. If the long position is fully closed, you will be left with only the short position.
Opening a reverse order means closing, not adding to your position.
App close path: Find the target position in your positions list, click 【Close】, set the price and quantity.
Web platform close path: Similarly, click the close button in the positions area, or directly place a reverse order.
[Completion standard] You understand that in one-way mode, placing a reverse order will directly close your existing position; it will not become a "hedge" lock.
Step 3: Close position logic in Hedge Mode
[What to do] Understand the rule that you can "hold both long and short positions simultaneously and close them separately" in hedge mode.
[How to do it] In hedge mode, you can hold both long and short positions at the same time, and they do not offset each other. When you open a long order, the system will not touch your existing short order; when you open a short order, it will not touch your existing long order.
When closing, you must clearly tell the system whether you want to close the long or the short position.
The positions list will show both long and short entries, each marked with a direction. Click the corresponding 【Close】 button and choose whether to close the long or the short.
Or, in the order placement area, directly select "Close Long" or "Close Short" instead of placing a reverse "Open Short" or "Open Long" order.
[Completion standard] You understand that in hedge mode you need to manually choose which side to close; opening a reverse order will not automatically offset your existing position.
Common mistake: Many who switch from one-way mode to hedge mode are used to the "open reverse = close" logic. As a result, in hedge mode, they find that after opening a reverse order, their original position still exists, and they think it is a bug. In hedge mode, opening a reverse order simply opens a new position; it does not automatically close the original one. To close a position, you must manually click the "Close" button.
Verification method after operation: Check your current position direction and quantity in the positions list. If you intend to switch modes, first go to the 【Open Orders】 and 【Positions】 pages to confirm there are no unfilled pending orders and no open positions; otherwise, the switch will be blocked by the system. After switching, try placing a small reverse order to observe whether it closes as expected (one-way mode) or opens a new position (hedge mode). Once confirmed, continue trading.
