Is OKX Fixed Coupon Principal-Protected? Settlement and Loss Scenarios

OKX Fixed Coupon is not a principal-protected product. OKX's official terms clearly define it as a "non-principal-protected structured earn product." When your investment matures, the principal you put in may be settled in a different token, and the market value of that token may be lower than the asset you originally invested.

The Fixed Coupon product is linked to BTC or ETH and includes Knock-In and Knock-Out mechanisms. The coupon is fixed, but that only makes the "interest" part certain. How your principal is settled depends on whether the price hits the strike price or the knock-in price at maturity.

What happens at settlement

Take the put product (subscribed with BTC) in the official terms as an example. The parameters are: strike price $99,000, knock-in price $117,000, knock-out price $63,000, and a 4-cycle term. At maturity, several scenarios can occur:

If the price never rises above the strike price and the knock-out is not triggered, your principal remains in BTC, and the full coupon for all four cycles is paid in BTC. This is the best possible outcome.

If the price rises above the strike price and the knock-in is triggered, your principal will be converted into stablecoins at the strike price. The amount of USDT you receive = subscription amount × strike price. However, the market price of BTC at that time may be much higher than $99,000, meaning you effectively "sold" your BTC at a price below market value and gave up the upside.

If the price triggers the knock-out, the product terminates early. Your principal is returned in BTC, but you only receive the coupon accrued up to the knock-out date. No further interest is earned after that.

Where losses come from

The coupon itself is positive, so you will not "owe" interest. The source of loss is the conversion of the settlement token.

Suppose you invest 1 BTC with a strike price of $99,000. At maturity, the BTC price rises to $120,000 and the knock-in is triggered. Your principal is converted at $99,000 into 99,000 USDT. But if you had simply held BTC and sold it at that point, you would have received 120,000 USDT. The difference of 21,000 USDT is your opportunity cost — the coupon is nowhere near enough to cover that gap.

Conversely, if you subscribe to a call product with USDT and the price falls below the strike price at maturity, your principal will be converted into BTC at the strike price. The amount of BTC you receive = subscription amount ÷ strike price, but the market value of that BTC is lower than the USDT you originally invested.

The boundary between principal-protected and non-principal-protected

OKX's "Shark Fin" product is explicitly labeled as a principal-protected structured product that returns the full principal at maturity. However, the Fixed Coupon product does not have this label. The official terms state "non-principal-protected," meaning that after conversion, the principal may be returned in a form worth less than its original value.

The difference between the two is this: Shark Fin has floating returns but locked principal; Fixed Coupon has a fixed coupon but a floating settlement token for the principal. The word "fixed" in Fixed Coupon only modifies the coupon, not the principal.

What you should check

Before subscribing, the order page will show the strike price, knock-in price, knock-out price, and coupon rate. These parameters determine under what conditions your principal will be converted into another token. If you cannot accept being "forced to sell" BTC or "forced to buy" BTC at a certain price, do not place an order based on the coupon rate alone.

The Fixed Coupon product is currently only available to VIP clients, with a minimum subscription threshold of 100,000 USDT or 1.5 BTC. It is normal for regular accounts not to see this product in the "Earn" section.
