How to Read OKX Footprint Charts in Exocharts? Data Source and Review

Exocharts' OKX footprint chart data comes from a direct exchange connection between Exocharts and OKX, not from a third-party aggregator. This means every trade, every bid and ask level you see on the chart is raw data from the OKX order book and trade flow.

Connecting the OKX Data Source

To pull OKX data in Exocharts, go to Manage → Connection Manager, find the OKX entry, and connect. After connecting, search for the trading pair you want in the symbol selector, then click Download Instruments to pull down the list of available OKX contracts.

One easy-to-miss detail: Exocharts desktop and web versions support different OKX ranges. The web version covers OKX spot, while the desktop version supports a wider range, including more OKX market types. If the OKX contract you want is not available in the web version, you need to download the desktop client.

In the symbol selector, the same trading pair may correspond to multiple data sources. When you search BTCUSDT, you will see contracts with the same name from Binance, OKX, Bybit, and other exchanges. Select the OKX source so the data on the chart is from OKX. If you pick the wrong source, the footprint, Delta, and CVD that follow will all be wrong.

What to Look at on the Footprint Chart During Review

Exocharts' footprint chart breaks each candle into price levels. Each level shows the volume of aggressive buying and aggressive selling. When reviewing, focus on three things:

Imbalance areas. When aggressive buy or sell volume at a price level is far greater than the opposite side, it shows aggressive intent to trade there. These areas often become reference levels for later pullbacks or bounces.

Delta and CVD. Delta is the difference between aggressive buying and aggressive selling. CVD accumulates Delta into a curve. If price is rising but CVD is falling, it means the rise is supported by passive resting orders rather than strong chasing interest. In review, this divergence is used to mark "suspicious breakouts."

Accumulation or distribution at key levels. Combined with Volume Profile, the footprint chart lets you see whether large orders at a price range are aggressively taking liquidity or passively resting. OKX depth data is directly connected to Exocharts, so volume changes at these levels are real-time.

Review Practice: Using Market Replay

Exocharts' Real-time Market Replay function can replay historical market action at the original pace. When reviewing, do not just drag the progress bar to see the result. Pick a decision point where you did not perform well, such as chasing a price spike or cutting a loss too early. Use Replay to go back to that moment, turn off the candles after that point, and look only at the footprint and Delta state at the time. Ask yourself: did the signals on the chart support the action I took?

This is more useful than looking back at a "perfect entry" because it forces you to judge again with incomplete information.

Common Pitfalls in Data Source Settings

Right-click the chart → Chart Settings → Data Source. Several toggles here can change what you see:

Filter small trades. When enabled, trades below the set value are filtered out. If the chart looks "too clean" at certain price levels during review, check this setting. Small trades may be hidden, causing you to underestimate turnover at that level.

Aggregated (market) orders. This shows only market orders and filters out limit order data. This is usually not recommended for footprint analysis because you lose exactly the passive resting order information. The buildup of passive orders at key levels is often the source of support or resistance.

Rebuild Chart. After changing data source settings, you must click this. Otherwise the chart will not re-render with the new settings.

Differences Between OKX Data and Other Exchanges

For the same BTCUSDT contract, the trade distribution on OKX may differ from Binance. This is not a data error. Different exchanges have different liquidity depth, market maker behavior, and even user structure. When reviewing OKX market action, use the OKX source. Do not use a Binance footprint chart to explain price behavior on OKX.
