OKX has two features called "copy trading," but they follow completely different things. Exchange copy trading follows "people": you pick a trader who publicly leads trades on the OKX platform, and the system automatically copies their futures or spot trades. Your funds stay in your OKX centralized account, matched and held by the platform. Wallet copy trading follows "on-chain addresses": through OKX Wallet's trader mode, you automatically copy the DEX trades of an external wallet address on-chain. Your assets remain in a wallet you control, and copy trading simply helps you automatically sign and broadcast transactions.

Which one to choose depends on who you are willing to trust and what kind of trading you want to follow.
Exchange Copy Trading: Following Platform Lead Traders
OKX futures copy trading and spot smart copy trading both happen inside the OKX centralized exchange. You do not need to manage private keys. Your funds are in your exchange account, and copy trading profits and losses are reflected in your account balance. Lead traders are reviewed by the platform and displayed in the "Copy Trading Marketplace" with their historical data.
Futures copy trading works like this: you select a trader, set your copy parameters (fixed margin or proportional copy), and when the trader opens a position, the system automatically copies it based on your settings. You can set a maximum copy amount, per-trade copy amount, and copy stop-loss. Spot smart copy trading is simpler: you enter an investment amount, and the system automatically calculates your copy amount based on the proportion of the trader's invested capital relative to their account equity.
The key judgment here is: you are trusting the trader's historical performance and how the platform presents them. The platform clearly states that trader selection is based only on historical data and does not guarantee future performance. You cannot see their real-time on-chain activity, and you do not need to custody your own assets, but you must accept platform rules (for example, copy trading may fail if a trader's account equity is below 500 USDT) and the profit-sharing mechanism.
Who it suits: people who do not want to deal with private keys, do not want to manage on-chain gas fees, are willing to accept platform custody, and want to follow futures or spot trading. The trade-off is that you rely on the platform's screening and display of traders, and copy trading happens inside the platform. You cannot verify the real on-chain footprint of a trader's actions.
Wallet Copy Trading: Following On-Chain Addresses with Self-Custody
OKX Wallet's copy trading feature is officially called copy trading under "Trader Mode." What it does: you designate an on-chain wallet address as the target, and the system automatically monitors that address's DEX trades. Based on your chosen buy mode (fixed amount or fixed ratio), it automatically executes buy orders on-chain. You can also set sell copy or automatic take-profit and stop-loss.
Copy trading tasks require more "on-chain" parameters than exchange copy trading: target network (currently mainly Solana and EVM chains like BSC), buy amount or ratio, token filter conditions (market cap range, liquidity range, token creation age), blacklist, and more. A copy trading task runs for a maximum of 3 months and then automatically stops.
The key difference is asset control. Your assets are in your OKX Wallet. Copy trading transactions are signed and executed through TEE (Trusted Execution Environment), and private keys are encrypted and stored in the TEE. Even OKX Wallet cannot access them. You do not need to manually sign every transaction, but your assets remain self-custodied.
The key judgment here is: you are trusting the on-chain behavior of that address. The copy target is not necessarily a platform-certified "trader." It may simply be an address labeled as "smart money." You do not have the platform's historical performance review as a reference. You need to judge for yourself whether that address's strategy is worth following. At the same time, on-chain trading involves unique risks such as gas fees, slippage, and MEV. Copy trading may also fail due to insufficient gas or insufficient token balance, causing the task to pause.
Who it suits: people who already use OKX Wallet, are willing to self-custody assets, and want to follow on-chain meme coins or DEX trading. The trade-off is that you bear the on-chain risks yourself, and the selection of copy targets is entirely your own responsibility.
They Cannot Be Mixed, and Should Not Be Mixed
These two features have different entry points, account systems, and asset locations. Exchange copy trading operates within the OKX centralized trading interface, with funds in your trading account. Wallet copy trading operates in the OKX Wallet Web3 environment, with funds in your on-chain wallet. You cannot use your exchange account balance to execute wallet copy trading, nor can assets in your wallet be used by the exchange copy trading system.
If you want to follow both platform traders and on-chain addresses, you need to prepare two separate pools of funds: one in your OKX trading account for exchange copy trading, and one in your OKX Wallet for wallet copy trading. They do not affect each other, and profits and losses are calculated separately.
My judgment is this: if you are new to copy trading, start with exchange copy trading. The barrier to entry is lower. You do not need to manage private keys or gas fees. The platform provides basic display and screening of traders, and you can review historical data before making a decision. If you are already familiar with on-chain operations, have your own criteria for judging addresses, and are willing to take on self-custody responsibility, then consider wallet copy trading.
Completion Criteria
The completion criterion for exchange copy trading is not simply "clicking the copy button." It is: after the copy relationship is established, you can see the trader's copy records on the "My Copy Trading" page, and when the trader next opens a position, a corresponding copy position appears in your account. The completion criterion for wallet copy trading is: the copy task status shows "In Progress," and after the target address's next qualifying on-chain buy, your wallet shows a corresponding change in token balance. For both, you need to actually observe one execution result after starting copy trading, not just see "Created" on the settings page.
