OKX Borrowing Pool Has Quota but Shows Unavailable: Check Trading Pair and Account Mode

The pool has quota, yet the system won't let you borrow — usually the problem isn't the pool itself, but your leverage multiplier, account mode, or order type blocking the borrowable amount calculation.

1. First, Understand That "Pool Has Quota" Does Not Equal "You Can Borrow"

On OKX, the borrowing quota is determined by the minimum of three factors: your account's borrowable amount, the master account borrowing limit, and the platform's total collateralized borrowing cap. The "pool quota" you see usually only means the platform's total collateralized borrowing cap hasn't been reached yet, but the other two limits may already be stopping you.

2. Check 1: Verify If the Account Mode Has Borrowing Enabled

Step 1: Confirm the current account mode supports borrowing

  • What to do: Go to the OKX App or website and check which account mode your trading account is currently in.

  • How to do it:

    • Situation A (Spot mode): You need to confirm in the "Spot Account Borrowing Mode" whether borrowing has been activated. If not activated, the manual borrowing entry itself will be unavailable.

    • Situation B (Contract/Margin mode): Under isolated margin, you need to transfer assets into the isolated position first before the borrowable amount is displayed. Without transferring assets in, the borrowing function won't take effect.

    • Situation C (Multi-currency margin / Portfolio margin mode): You need to check whether the "Auto-Borrow" toggle is enabled. If auto-borrow is off, a negative balance exceeding the interest-free limit will trigger auto-conversion rather than allowing you to continue borrowing.

  • What counts as completion: You have confirmed the current account mode and whether the borrowing function is enabled under that mode.

3. Check 2: Verify Whether Effective Equity Is Enough to Cover the Margin

Even if the pool has funds, the system will not let you borrow if your "effective equity" is insufficient.

Step 2: Compare effective equity against the required margin

  • What to do: On the borrowing page, check the system-prompted "Borrowable Amount" or failure reason.

  • How to do it: When borrowing, the system verifies: Effective Equity ≥ Total occupied margin including this borrowing. The effective equity formula is: Equity of each currency × Spot USD price × Currency discount rate – Trading losses from spot sell orders and option buy orders – Estimated fees for all pending orders.

    • If a certain currency in your account is being used as position collateral, or you have unfilled pending orders freezing funds, the available effective equity will decrease.

    • If the "effective equity" is insufficient to cover the margin required by the borrowing (occupied margin = Borrow amount / Leverage multiplier), the system will prompt that borrowing is unavailable.

  • What counts as completion: You have confirmed whether your current effective equity is greater than the required margin for the borrowing.

4. Check 3: Check If the Leverage Multiplier Is Set Too High

Step 3: Try lowering the leverage multiplier before borrowing

  • What to do: Adjust the leverage multiplier you have set on the borrowing page.

  • How to do it: OKX official documentation clearly states: The higher the leverage multiplier, the lower the maximum borrowable amount. When your available balance is sufficient, setting a higher leverage may actually result in an order size smaller than your available balance. Appropriately lowering the leverage can give you greater buying power.

    • This is a counter-intuitive setting many people overlook — you might think higher leverage lets you borrow more, but under the tiered limit logic, high leverage can actually restrict how much you can borrow.

  • What counts as completion: After lowering the leverage, the borrowable amount increases or you successfully borrow.

5. Check 4: Check If Platform Risk Control Has Been Triggered (Auto-Conversion Alert)

Step 4: Check if there is an alert indicator next to that currency in the asset list

  • What to do: On the trading page, find the currency you want to borrow in the asset list.

  • How to do it: If a yellow or red indicator light appears next to that currency, it means it has approached or reached the platform's total collateralized borrowing cap:

    • 1–2 yellow bars: Risk of auto-conversion

    • 3 yellow bars: Auto-conversion imminent

    • 3 yellow bars + red circle: Auto-conversion in progress

    • Once the platform's total cap is reached, that currency's assets will not count towards available margin and cannot be used as collateral for borrowing.

  • What counts as completion: You have confirmed whether that currency has triggered platform-level risk restrictions.

Common failure reason: Many users only see the "pool quota" and overlook the two hidden caps — the "master account borrowing limit" and the "leverage tier limit". Users of different VIP levels have different master account borrowing limits; exceeding this limit will also cause the order to fail. Additionally, the borrowing limits for the same currency in different trading pair accounts do not affect each other. You might have maxed out borrowing in BTC/USDT while still having quota available in XRP/USDT.

Risk reminder: If borrowing fails because the currency has already reached the platform's total collateralized borrowing cap, there is no point in continuing to force the operation. The platform processes auto-conversions in descending order of collateralized borrow amounts. If you hold a large amount of that currency and have a large borrow position, you could become the target of system liquidation.

After completing the above checks, how do you confirm the issue is resolved?

Lower the leverage to 1x and try borrowing a very small amount. If the borrow goes through, the problem lies in the leverage tier limit or insufficient effective equity. If you still can't borrow, check whether there is an alert indicator next to that currency in the asset list — if there is, it's a platform-level restriction; wait for the red light to clear and try again. If all the above are ruled out, go to [Account] → [Security Center] to confirm whether the borrowing function is truly enabled under your current account mode.
