VeChain's goal from the start was never just to be a faster blockchain. Instead, it aims to let businesses record and verify supply chain data on a blockchain without having to worry about the cost risks caused by cryptocurrency price swings. This goal shapes its two core designs: a dual-token model that separates VET and VTHO, and a reward ecosystem built around verifiable actions.

What VET and VTHO Each Do
VET is the vehicle for value storage and governance. Its total supply is about 86 billion tokens, all of which have already been minted, so no more will be created. Holding VET by itself does not directly generate on-chain transactions, but it is the base asset for participating in network staking and receiving a share of rewards.
VTHO is the actual consumable. Any operation on VeChainThor—making a transfer, calling a contract, or writing data—requires paying VTHO as gas. Part of the VTHO used in every transaction is burned, which means the circulating supply of VTHO decreases as the network is used.
The relationship between the two changed in 2026. Under the old model, holding VET automatically generated VTHO at a fixed rate of about 0.000432 VTHO per VET per day. After the Hayabusa upgrade, VTHO generation switched to staking: VET holders now need to stake their VET and receive an NFT representing their staking position in order to participate in VTHO reward distribution. VET that is not staked no longer automatically produces VTHO.
The practical effect of this change is that VET went from an asset that earns rewards just by holding it to an asset that requires active staking to participate in network earnings. The staking threshold was lowered to 10,000 VET in January 2026, worth about 82 dollars at that time, allowing retail participants to join.
VTHO Costs Are Predictable, But Its Price Is Not
The main selling point of VeChain's dual-token model is cost predictability. Businesses do not need to worry that VET price changes will affect their operating costs, because gas is paid in VTHO, and VTHO consumption depends on transaction complexity rather than being directly tied to VET's market price.
This logic works from a business perspective: if a transaction consumes a fixed amount of VTHO, a company only needs to make sure its wallet has enough VTHO, and the cost measured in VTHO stays stable. The exchange rate between VTHO and fiat currency is a separate issue, but VeChain offers a fee delegation mechanism that allows a third party to pay gas on behalf of others, so business users can complete transactions without holding VTHO.
But VTHO itself is a market-priced token. Its price is determined by supply and demand, not fixed by the protocol. If you as an individual hold VET and stake it to receive VTHO, what you receive is an asset with a floating price, not a stablecoin.
Real-World Adoption: Supply Chain Is the Main Line, VeBetter Is the Growth Area
VeChain's enterprise use cases focus on supply chain traceability and product verification. Publicly recorded partners include Walmart China, whose food traceability platform has processed more than 200 million transactions, as well as BMW, LVMH for luxury goods anti-counterfeiting, and auditing and certification organizations such as DNV and PwC.
The technical implementation of these partnerships is worth noting: many transactions happen on private networks or customized environments built on top of VeChainThor, rather than all being publicly visible on the main public chain. Walmart China's traceability platform is a private network built on VeChainThor. This does not change the fact that VeChain technology is being used, but it means the enterprise activity directly observable on the public chain may be lower than total transaction volume.
VeBetter is the more active growth area in 2026. It is a user-facing ecosystem for verifying sustainable behavior. Users receive B3TR rewards for actions such as recycling, driving electric vehicles, and eco-friendly shopping. According to data from March 2026, VeBetter has more than 5.2 million wallets receiving weekly rewards, with over 48 million verified actions in total. The partnership between Evearn and Smartcar brings electric vehicle trip data into VeBetter, covering more than 30 car brands across Europe and North America. SolarWise tokenizes physical solar panels in Brazil through NFTs, splitting ownership so holders receive VET payments from electricity sales revenue.
But Q1 2026 data shows network activity is declining. Daily active addresses dropped by 71.5%, and DeFi TVL fell by 47.6%. VeBetter's wallet count and verified actions are growing, but overall network user activity is shrinking. This shows that the picture of real-world adoption is layered: enterprise-side record writing and VeBetter action verification continue, while speculative and trading activity is receding.
A Few Things You Need to Verify Yourself
If you care about whether enterprise partnerships are real: Walmart China's traceability platform has a publicly recorded 200 million transactions, and the auditing relationships with DNV and PwC also have years of records. These are confirmed facts. However, the specific terms of enterprise partnerships, revenue sharing, and the direct economic value of these partnerships to VET/VTHO holders are not fully public, so you need to judge for yourself.
If you care about VTHO earnings: StarGate staking APY estimates range from 2.3% to 11.4%, depending on node tier and network conditions. This is not a guaranteed return. Actual earnings depend on validator performance and block production. Validators take 30% of block rewards plus all priority fees, while the remaining 70% is distributed to delegators according to staking weight.
If you plan to hold VET without staking: you no longer automatically receive VTHO. VET in your wallet is simply a value storage asset that does not generate cash flow. To participate in network earnings, you need to stake and choose a validator to delegate to.
