Beyond paying gas and staking, the most notable uses of MultiversX's EGLD now focus on the identity and trust layer for AI agents, as well as the real-time settlement capabilities built around the Supernova upgrade. But one piece of information must come first: the MultiversX mainnet is currently paused. In September 2026, the network was attacked due to a VM-layer atomicity vulnerability, and the team is carrying out a recovery hard fork. Until the official security notice is released, deposits, withdrawals, and transaction broadcasts for EGLD and ESDT should be paused.

What EGLD Does at the Protocol Layer
EGLD is the native token of MultiversX. Every transaction and every smart contract call on the network requires EGLD to pay transaction fees. This fee is used to incentivize validators to process transactions and maintain network security.
Staking is another core use of EGLD. Validators need to stake EGLD to participate in consensus. Regular holders can delegate their EGLD to validators and share staking rewards. The official page shows the current average APR is around 8%, while the flexible staking product on Gate lists an estimated APR of 5.61%. Staked EGLD also acts as economic security for the network — if an attacker tries to act maliciously, they face the risk of having their stake slashed.
Supply model. The theoretical maximum supply of EGLD is 31,415,926 tokens. 20 million were initially minted, and the rest is released gradually over 10 years. However, this "inflation" is offset by transaction fees — a portion of each fee is burned, so the actual new EGLD entering circulation is "planned issuance minus burned amount." In a 2026 update, the official team described this mechanism as "adaptive burning plus KPI-gated emission," meaning the emission pace is linked to network usage.
MX-8004: Giving AI Agents an Identity
In February 2026, MultiversX launched MX-8004, a native implementation of the ERC-8004 Trustless Agents standard. It consists of three smart contracts that read each other:
The Identity Registry lets each AI agent mint a soulbound NFT representing its on-chain identity. This NFT anchors the agent's name, URI, and public key, allowing other contracts to deterministically resolve the agent's identity.
The Verification Registry records the work completed by agents. Agents submit proof of completion, and oracles verify the results before writing structured verification records on-chain. This creates a verifiable work log tied to the agent's identity.
The Reputation Registry generates reputation scores based on verified work. Feedback must be tied to verified work, and ratings are limited by verified history, which reduces the space for manipulating scores.
The significance of this system is: when AI agents need to transact and collaborate with each other, who they are, what they have done, and how trustworthy they are can be read on a shared registry layer, without each platform having to maintain its own metadata. MX-8004 is currently running on devnet, and an Agent Explorer is already available to query registered agents.
Supernova and Real-Time Settlement
The biggest protocol upgrade MultiversX pushed forward in 2026 is called Supernova. Its core change is decoupling consensus from execution. The officially stated goal is to achieve sub-second finality and 600-millisecond block times without sacrificing scalability.
The purpose of this upgrade is clear: real-time on-chain settlement. If confirmation times can truly be pushed to sub-second levels, consumer applications that need instant feedback — such as payments, in-game transactions, and micro-payments between agents — could run natively on-chain without relying on off-chain channels or centralized servers.
Supernova launched the Battle of Nodes stress test in March 2026, with three tracks covering security, validators, and guilds, offering a total prize pool of over $150,000. Cointelegraph also joined the MultiversX network as a validator around the same period.
What Must Be Verified Now
Mainnet recovery status. In September 2026, MultiversX paused block production after an attacker exploited a VM-layer atomicity vulnerability. The team subsequently announced that the recovery hard fork had completed internal testing and the mainnet checkpoint was ready, but the mainnet is still paused. The official team explicitly reminded users not to submit transactions and not to deposit or withdraw EGLD and ESDT through exchanges or cross-chain bridges. The attacker's account was frozen, and law enforcement has been involved.
Upbit's warning. The Korean exchange Upbit has placed MultiversX on its trading warning list and suspended deposit and withdrawal services. This is a risk control measure at the exchange level and does not mean EGLD itself has failed, but it shows that exchanges are waiting for confirmation of network recovery before potentially reopening services.
Exchange status. Until recovery is complete, the EGLD prices and trading pair statuses you see on centralized exchanges may not reflect the actual on-chain situation. EGLD currently has perpetual contract markets on exchanges like Binance, OKX, and Bybit, but whether spot deposits and withdrawals are open depends on each exchange's judgment of the recovery progress.
Operational Branches
If you hold EGLD on an exchange: Wait for exchange announcements. Deposits and withdrawals are likely paused until the MultiversX mainnet recovers and exchanges confirm their wallet infrastructure is ready.
If you hold EGLD in a self-custody wallet: Your private keys and balances are not affected by the network pause, but you cannot broadcast any transactions. Do not attempt transfers or staking operations until the official recovery confirmation.
If you are in delegated staking: Staked EGLD remains locked in the staking contract, but no new block rewards will be generated while the network is paused. The Ledger by Figment MultiversX validator node was shut down in April 2026. If you were using that node, you need to redelegate to another validator, but this operation cannot be executed under the current network pause.
