What Else Can Neo Do? N3, Neo X, and the GAS Mechanism

 /
2

Neo's current use cases can be split into two lines: N3 is the underlying asset and governance layer, and Neo X is the execution layer for EVM developers. If you hold NEO or GAS, you need to know what each of them does. If you are considering developing or interacting on Neo, you need to know which chain suits which scenario. The division of labor between the two tokens has not changed: NEO handles governance and voting, while GAS handles payments and consumption.

Neo N3: The Home of Assets, Governance, and GAS Generation

N3 is Neo's mainnet and the settlement layer for NEO and GAS. Its core mechanism is dBFT consensus, where NEO holders vote to select consensus nodes. Transactions reach finality within seconds, and there is no risk of forks or rollbacks.

NEO's use is centered on governance. Holding NEO allows you to vote for council members and consensus nodes. Voting is not just a symbolic act — if the node you vote for is elected, you receive a share of the network fee rewards based on your voting weight. If you do not vote, simply holding NEO still earns you a small amount of GAS, but the share is much smaller than if you participate in governance. GAS is automatically extracted when you transfer or vote with NEO; there is no need to manually "claim" it.

GAS is the fuel for all operations on N3. Transfers, contract deployment, contract calls, asset registration, and using the native oracle or NeoFS storage all require GAS. N3's GAS has no fixed cap. System fees are burned, and network fees are distributed to consensus nodes. This means GAS supply is influenced by network usage, rather than following a fixed decay curve like the older version.

N3's native features are what set it apart from typical EVM chains. The protocol layer has built-in interfaces for oracles, decentralized identity (NeoID), and distributed storage (NeoFS). Developers do not need to integrate third-party middleware to use these services. Multi-language smart contracts are also a feature of N3. NeoVM supports writing contracts in C#, Python, Java, Go, TypeScript, and other languages, making it more friendly for developers without a Solidity background.

Neo X: An EVM-Compatible Sidechain and Cross-Chain GAS Flow

Neo X is an independent EVM-compatible chain based on Geth, compatible with Ethereum features up to the Prague hard fork. Its role is not to replace N3, but to bring in developers and applications from the EVM ecosystem.

GAS plays two roles on Neo X. First, it is the governance and staking token for Neo X. Becoming a Neo X candidate node requires staking 1000 GAS (mainnet). GAS holders can vote for candidate nodes. Each round of elections produces 7 consensus nodes, and network fees are distributed among nodes and voters. Second, GAS is currently the only supported asset on the bridge between Neo X and N3. You can bridge GAS from N3 to Neo X, or do the reverse. Arrival time is usually 1 to 2 minutes.

Neo X's technical selling point is MEV resistance. It uses threshold encryption and sealed transactions to hide transaction content before it enters the mempool. Combined with dBFT consensus ordering, this reduces the space for front-running and sandwich attacks. This mechanism went live after the mainnet v0.4.2 upgrade, and the core codebase was made public in October 2025. If you care about transaction fairness, this is a practical difference between Neo X and typical EVM chains.

The message bridge went live in December 2025. It is more general than the asset bridge: it allows contracts on Neo X to call functions on N3 (such as oracles and NeoFS), and vice versa. This means EVM applications on Neo X can access N3's native services without users having to move assets back and forth between the two chains.

Direction for 2026: Stablecoins and AI Applications

Neo founder Da Hongfei clarified priorities after a strategy meeting in January 2026: onboard assets and build applications. On the asset side, the goal is to introduce stablecoins like USDT0 and USD1, and to cooperate with cross-chain protocols like LayerZero and Wormhole to provide liquidity for N3 and Neo X. On the application side, Neo X will serve as the base layer and SpoonOS as the framework, targeting AI agent scenarios.

The impact of this direction on token utility is indirect: if stablecoins and AI applications really bring usage, there will be more scenarios for GAS consumption. But this is a plan, not an established fact. You do not need to think that the value logic of NEO or GAS has changed just because of the word "AI" — their mechanisms have not changed. What is changing is the type of users the ecosystem is trying to attract.

Where to Start if You Want to Actually Use It

Want to participate in governance or earn GAS: Put NEO in a wallet where you control the private keys (not an exchange, because exchanges may withhold GAS), and vote for council candidates through Neo's governance portal. After voting, GAS accumulates automatically per block and is visible in your wallet.

Want to move assets to an EVM environment: Use Neo X's official bridge. Currently, only GAS is supported for cross-chain transfer. Initiate a deposit on the Neo N3 side, and receive it on the Neo X side with an EVM wallet like MetaMask. The same applies for withdrawals in reverse. Before bridging, make sure both wallets have enough GAS to cover transaction fees, otherwise the transaction confirmation window will not appear.

Want to develop: If you write Solidity, start with Neo X. If you prefer C# or Python, or need native oracle/storage, start with N3. The message bridge allows contracts on the two chains to call each other, but cross-chain calls have latency and dependencies. Do not assume the two chains are synchronized in logic that requires atomicity.

Completion Standard

It is not about "knowing the difference between N3 and Neo X," but rather: If you hold NEO, you know the difference in GAS earnings between voting and not voting, and your NEO is in a wallet that can receive GAS. If you use GAS, you know that it is fuel on N3 and a governance and bridging asset on Neo X — these are not the same ledger. If you just want to use the Neo network, N3 is the mainnet and Neo X is another chain. Do not mix up addresses and networks.
