Binance: Buy TAO or Subnet Tokens? Comparing Returns and Exit Paths

Buying TAO and buying subnet tokens on Binance are essentially two different investment targets. TAO is an "index fund" for the whole network, while a subnet token (Alpha) is more like a "venture capital" bet on a single AI startup. If you only want beta exposure to the Bittensor ecosystem, buying TAO spot on Binance is the most direct path. If you are willing to accept the risk that a single subnet could go to zero in exchange for potential excess returns, then subnet tokens are worth considering. But that path still requires leaving Binance and using on-chain AMMs.

Different sources of returns

TAO holders on Binance can earn Soft Staking yield. According to Binance's page, the estimated annualized yield for TAO is about 1.00%, with a minimum holding of 0.1 TAO and a maximum of 100 TAO for staking. That yield is not high, but the process is simple: after activating it on the Soft Staking page, Binance will automatically use the TAO in your spot account for network staking. You can still trade or withdraw at any time, so it does not affect liquidity.

The return logic for subnet tokens is completely different. Bittensor subnets have two sources of income: TAO emission allocation and changes in the Alpha token price itself. After the Taoflow upgrade in November 2025, emissions no longer depend on token price but on net staking inflows. Only subnets with net capital inflows receive emissions, while subnets with net outflows receive zero emissions. This means a subnet token's "yield" is not a fixed rate. It depends on whether the subnet you choose can keep attracting capital, whether it can produce valuable AI services, and how its Alpha token performs relative to TAO.

Alpha tokens are often promoted with high APYs of 70%–100% or even higher. But those returns are denominated in Alpha tokens, not TAO. If Alpha falls 50% against TAO in a month, a 100% APY means nothing. Long-term observers have noted that over the past six months, most subnets have fallen 70%–90% compared with TAO.

What to buy on Binance and how

TAO spot trading pairs on Binance include TAO/USDT and TAO/USDC. After buying, you can activate Soft Staking on the Earn page to earn about 1% annualized yield. If you do not want to stake, you can simply hold spot TAO and benefit from its price movements.

Subnet tokens are not currently traded on Binance spot. Kraken announced in July 2026 that it will list some Bittensor subnet tokens, such as Chutes, Targon, and Ridges AI, but Binance has not followed yet. To buy or sell subnet tokens, you need to withdraw TAO to a wallet that supports the Bittensor chain, such as Talisman or SubWallet, and then complete the swap through an on-chain AMM. Every swap involves slippage. The shallower the pool, the larger the slippage, and you also pay network transaction fees denominated in TAO.

The real difference in exit paths

TAO's exit path is simple and direct. Sell TAO spot on Binance for USDT or USD, then withdraw through the fiat channel. Binance's selling process is usually fast, and the actual arrival time depends on the withdrawal method and your region.

Subnet token exits are constrained by liquidity depth. Exiting through an on-chain AMM means swapping Alpha back into TAO, and the price is determined by the reserve ratio of TAO and Alpha in the pool. If a subnet is experiencing net capital outflows, the TAO reserves in the pool are shrinking, and a large sell order will push the price down further. An even more extreme risk is subnet deregistration. If a subnet becomes the lowest-priced one and the number of newly registered subnets exceeds the 128-subnet cap, it can be deregistered. Your Alpha would then be converted into TAO at the liquidation price and returned to your wallet. That liquidation price may be far below your purchase cost.

The judgment you need to make

Choosing TAO or subnet tokens depends on how you judge your own ability. TAO's yield is limited, about 1% on Binance, but its value does not depend on the execution of a single team. Subnet tokens have higher potential returns, but you need to evaluate a subnet's product, team, organic demand, and staking inflow trends yourself. That is much harder than reading a price chart.

If you do not know Bittensor's 128 subnets well enough to tell which ones have real product-market fit, holding only TAO is a simpler choice. If you are genuinely bullish on a specific AI service, such as Chutes for inference compute or Templar for decentralized model training, and you are willing to accept the risk that Alpha may fall sharply against TAO, and you can tolerate the friction of on-chain operations, then subnet tokens are worth considering.
