SKY bought on Binance is an ERC-20 token held in your exchange account. In this state, SKY cannot directly participate in Sky Protocol's on-chain governance voting, because governance voting requires you to hold SKY in your own wallet and operate through Sky's governance portal or staking engine. But there is a complete path you can follow: withdraw SKY to your own wallet, stake it through Sky.money, and then delegate or vote directly.

Why SKY Held on Binance Cannot Vote Directly
Sky Protocol governance is on-chain voting. To hold SKY and participate in voting, you need to deposit your tokens into the governance contract or staking engine. Voting power is recorded on-chain through smart contracts. Binance is a custodial platform, so SKY in user accounts is centrally held by the platform. The on-chain ownership belongs to the exchange's pooled addresses, not to you personally.
Binance Academy's explanation also makes this clear: the entry point for participating in Sky governance and staking is Sky.money, a non-custodial platform where users maintain full control of their funds. Buying coins on an exchange and participating in on-chain governance are two separate environments.
If you just want to earn yield on SKY, Binance may offer some savings or staking products, but those are not the same as Sky Protocol's native Staking Engine, and they will not give you governance voting rights.
From Binance to Voting: The Complete Path
If you want to use SKY bought on Binance to participate in governance, follow these steps:
Step 1: Withdraw to your own wallet. Withdraw SKY from Binance to your Ethereum wallet (such as MetaMask or Ledger). Sky Protocol runs on Ethereum, and SKY is an ERC-20 token. When withdrawing, select Ethereum mainnet. If you use another network, SkyLink supports cross-chain transfers, but governance and staking still take place on Sky.money on the Ethereum mainnet.
Step 2: Connect to Sky.money. Open Sky.money and connect your wallet. This platform supports staking SKY, delegating voting power, borrowing USDS, and earning staking rewards.
Step 3: Stake SKY in the Staking Engine. Staking has no minimum amount, no lock-up period, and no exit fees. You can stake or unstake at any time. After staking, your SKY enters the protocol's non-custodial staking contract, and you gain three capabilities: earning staking rewards, delegating voting power, and borrowing USDS using your staked SKY as collateral.
Step 4: Choose your voting method. There are two options:
Vote directly: Vote on proposals through the Sky governance portal (vote.sky.money). Connect the wallet holding SKY, deposit SKY into the voting contract during the voting period, and withdraw it after voting ends.
Delegate voting power: Delegate your voting power to a recognized delegate in the staking engine. Delegates cannot access your SKY, and you can change your delegate at any time.
What Staking Can Bring
According to data from Sky's official staking page, the current SKY staking reward rate is approximately 6.56% APY, with rewards paid in SKY or USDS. Rewards are variable and determined by Sky governance votes. Sky.money does not set or guarantee the rate.
There is an important change in the funding source for staking rewards. Starting in August 2026, Sky Protocol's staking rewards shifted from "treasury-funded" to "revenue-funded." Each settlement cycle, 22.5% of protocol surplus is used to buy back SKY on the open market and distribute it to stakers. As of late August 2026, approximately 17.4 billion SKY was staked, representing about 74% of the circulating supply.
Delegation: The Option for Those Who Don't Want to Vote on Every Proposal
Sky governance has a system of "Aligned Delegates." The governance portal lists multiple delegates ranked by voting weight. The top delegates control billions of SKY in voting power.
The logic of delegation is: you hand your voting power to a delegate, who votes on your behalf. Delegates cannot touch your SKY—they can only exercise voting power. You can set up delegation in the staking engine and change it at any time.
If you don't have the energy to research specific protocol parameters (such as Sky savings rates, risk parameters, or upgrade proposals) one by one, delegating to an active delegate is a more practical approach. If you care about certain specific issues, you can also choose not to delegate and only participate manually in key votes.
What Else You Can Do While Staking
Staking SKY does not mean locking it up. Besides earning rewards and participating in governance, you can also:
Borrow USDS using your staked SKY as collateral. Borrow rates are variable (currently around 5.96% APR), and there is liquidation risk. If the SKY price drops significantly, your collateral position may be liquidated. Borrowing and not borrowing are two independent choices—staking itself does not force you to borrow.
Continue accumulating rewards. Even with an active loan, staking rewards still accrue in full.
Unstake at any time. There is no lock-up period and no exit fee.
Boundaries to Keep in Mind
The separation between buying coins on an exchange and on-chain governance is structural, not an operational issue. As long as SKY is in your Binance account, you are a "holder" rather than a "governance participant." If you just want price exposure or to participate in the exchange's savings products, you don't need to go down this path. If you want voting rights or native protocol staking rewards, withdrawing to your own wallet is the only way.
Staking reward rates are determined by governance, not a fixed rate. In February 2026, Sky governance voted to reduce staking reward issuance by approximately 161.8 million SKY (over a 180-day period) to reduce dilution pressure. Reward rates will change with governance decisions—do not treat the current number as a long-term commitment.
Delegation does not mean giving up control. Delegates cannot transfer your SKY, and you can change your delegation or reclaim your voting power at any time. But if you don't pay attention to governance developments for a long time, your delegate may vote in directions you don't understand. Regularly reviewing your delegate's voting record is a reasonable practice.
