Binance Futures supports opening long and short positions at the same time, but there is a clear condition: you must change the position mode from the default one-way mode to hedge mode in settings. In the default one-way mode, if you open a long position and then open a short position, the system will automatically close the long position to reverse the position. You cannot hold positions in both directions at the same time. You need to manually switch the mode to hold both long and short positions.
Check your current position mode
Goal: Check whether your futures account is currently in one-way mode or hedge mode.
Path: Open the Binance app or website, enter the futures trading page (USDT-M or COIN-M), click the settings icon (gear) in the upper right corner, and find 'Position Mode' to see the current status.
Check: The page clearly shows 'One-Way Mode' or 'Hedge Mode' (in some cases also called hedging mode).
Switch to Hedge Mode (if needed)
If you are currently in one-way mode and want to hold long and short positions at the same time, you can switch the position mode to Hedge Mode in settings, and confirm according to the pop-up prompt.
Important: Before switching, all existing positions and open orders under that futures contract must be closed or canceled. If you still have positions, the switch button will be disabled and cannot be clicked.
If you are already in Hedge Mode, you can open positions in both directions directly. The settings page showing Hedge Mode means the switch was successful.
How to place orders in Hedge Mode
After switching, the order panel will show a new 'Position Side' (or position direction) option, allowing you to manually choose to open long or short.
How to do it: In the order panel dropdown, select 'Long' or 'Short'. First place one long order, then place one short order. The two orders will appear separately in the positions list. The margin used in Hedge Mode is the sum of the margin for the long side and the margin for the short side.
Check: If the positions list shows both LONG and SHORT positions at the same time with corresponding quantities, the operation is successful.
Common failure reason: error code -4061
If you see the error Order's position side does not match user's setting when trading via API or on the pro interface, it means your current mode is one-way mode, which does not meet the hedge mode requirement. Follow the switch process above to fix it.
Risk reminder: when switching modes, long and short positions will be 'netted'
Binance has completed a unified upgrade of position modes for USDT-M and COIN-M futures. If your USDT-M account is in Hedge Mode and your COIN-M account is in one-way mode, the system will automatically switch the COIN-M account to Hedge Mode. During the switch, all open orders, including take-profit and stop-loss orders, will be automatically canceled.
If you switch from Hedge Mode back to one-way mode while holding both long and short positions, the system will close both sides at the current mark price and keep only one net position. The average position price and account balance may change significantly, and the related profit or loss is borne by the user. Please confirm your needs before switching.
How to verify the change
Go to the futures trading page and check the position mode status in the settings icon in the upper right corner. If it shows 'Hedge Mode', the setting is correct. You can also see the separate 'Position Side' option in the order panel, which confirms you are already in Hedge Mode.
