Why Reduce-Only Orders Don't Work in Binance Hedge Mode
In Hedge Mode, Reduce-Only orders are only effective for "open" operations. If you try to use the Reduce-Only feature to close an existing position, the system will reject it outright, because it interprets the close order as following the logic of One-Way Mode, and the close direction in Hedge Mode does not apply to that setting.

Below are the specific rules and how to operate correctly.
Prerequisites
You have enabled Hedge Mode (bilateral position mode) on Binance Futures trading.
When placing a "Close" order, you checked the "Reduce-Only" option.
Your order was rejected by the system.
Confirm your position mode is Hedge Mode
In the preferences at the top right of the trading interface, check the current mode:
Case A: Set to "Hedge Mode"
In this mode, you can hold both long and short positions for the same contract simultaneously.
Key limitation: In this mode, the "Reduce-Only" option is only valid for open orders; close orders cannot use the Reduce-Only function.
Case B: Set to "One-Way Mode"
In this mode, Reduce-Only orders work normally, provided the order direction is opposite to the existing position and the quantity does not exceed the position size.
Completion Standard: Confirm that your position mode is Hedge Mode.
Understand the rules of Reduce-Only in Hedge Mode
Binance officially states: In Hedge Mode, only open orders can set take-profit and stop-loss; close orders cannot.
This means:
When opening a position: If the direction is opposite to an existing position, the system allows checking Reduce-Only to prevent accidentally increasing the position in the same direction when opening in the opposite direction.
When closing a position: Whether you select close long or close short, as long as you check Reduce-Only, the system will judge that the order's "direction is the same as the open direction" or "does not meet the Reduce-Only logic," and thus directly reject it.
Completion Standard: Understand that "Reduce-Only" in Hedge Mode is only applicable to opening scenarios.
Correctly closing positions in Hedge Mode
Since Reduce-Only cannot be used for closing, you need to reduce your positions in the following ways:
Method 1: Place a normal close order directly
Go to the [Positions] page and click the [Close] button for the relevant position.
Enter the quantity to close and submit directly. No need to check Reduce-Only.
Method 2: Use stop-limit or stop-market orders to close positions
On the [Positions] page, set take-profit/stop-loss for the existing position.
Note: In Hedge Mode, take-profit and stop-loss orders need to be set when opening a position; you cannot check take-profit/stop-loss on the order panel for closings. You can add them from the position details page for existing positions.
Method 3: Use "Auto-Repay" (for Margin trading)
If you are trading in Margin, you can use "Auto-Repay" mode to sell assets, and the system will automatically repay liabilities and reduce the position.
Completion Standard: Successfully close part or all of your position using one of the above methods.
If you really need Reduce-Only, switch back to One-Way Mode
If you insist on using Reduce-Only to close positions:
Close all existing positions (must be fully closed).
Cancel all open orders.
Go to the top right [Preferences] → [Position Mode] in the trading interface.
Switch to "One-Way Mode".
After switching, you can use Reduce-Only normally when placing close orders.
Completion Standard: Successfully switch to One-Way Mode, and Reduce-Only orders can be submitted normally.
Common Failure Reasons
Error code -4061: Position direction mismatch
This is the most common error when using Reduce-Only to close in Hedge Mode. The root cause: your order is judged by the system as "direction same as open direction" or "closing is not applicable to Reduce-Only," not a limitation of the code itself.
Risk Reminders
You must close positions before switching position modes: Binance does not allow switching position modes while holding open positions or pending orders.
System upgrades may cancel orders: When the position mode settings for USDⓈ-M and Coin-M futures are unified and inconsistent, all pending orders (including Reduce-Only and stop orders) may be canceled during synchronization.
Settlement risk when switching from Hedge to One-Way: When switching from Hedge Mode to One-Way Mode, if both long and short positions exist, the system will perform net settlement at the mark price, which may cause significant changes in the position average price and account balance.

How to confirm the operation is complete
Verify that you have handled things correctly:
Go to the [Positions] page and check that the current position mode is correct.
If closing was successful, the position quantity should be reduced or zero.
If you switched modes, confirm in [Preferences] that the mode is now "One-Way Mode".
If your order is still rejected, check the error code. If it is -4061, it means position direction mismatch; confirm whether you are in Hedge Mode attempting to use Reduce-Only to close.
