Chinese users cannot buy Nexus Mutual cover. Nexus Mutual's membership access list clearly marks China as a restricted jurisdiction. Even if you somehow bypass KYC, the later claim assessment may not proceed properly because of identity verification issues. More importantly, Nexus Mutual's "cover" is fundamentally different from traditional insurance. The claim result is not unilaterally controlled by you.

Why Chinese Users Cannot Buy
Nexus Mutual is not an insurance company. It is a discretionary mutual. Becoming a member is a prerequisite for buying cover and filing claims, and membership requires KYC/AML verification. The official documentation lists restricted countries including China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, India, Japan, South Korea, and others.
If KYC is rejected, you cannot complete member registration, so you cannot buy any cover product. Nexus Mutual does not offer a "no KYC purchase" channel, and it does not accept third-party nominee accounts. Cover is minted as an NFT on the buyer's address, and the Claims Committee verifies member identity during claim assessment.
If you are searching "how to buy Nexus cover", first confirm whether you are in a restricted region. If you are not in a restricted region, keep reading.
Can Binance Funds Be Used to Buy?
You cannot pay directly. Nexus Mutual cover fees and claim payouts are denominated and paid in ETH, USDC, or cbBTC. Assets in Binance need to be withdrawn to a self-custody wallet first (such as MetaMask or Ledger), and then you use that wallet to connect to the Nexus Mutual app to complete the purchase.
It is strongly recommended to use a hardware wallet to generate your Nexus Mutual member address, because both buying cover and filing claims require signing transactions with that address. If you keep assets in a Binance account and try to operate directly, there is technically no interface for that.
Does the Cover Match Your Needs?
Nexus Mutual does have a product for centralized exchanges called Custody Cover. Covered exchanges include Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, Deribit, and Bitmex.
But Custody Cover's positioning may differ from the "insurance" you expect:
High coverage threshold. The official description says Custody Cover is for "investors and funds looking to protect USD 1 million or more in digital assets." This means if you are an ordinary retail user, your asset size is not within the product's target range.
Trigger conditions have clear boundaries. Payout conditions typically include exchange hacks and withdrawal suspensions lasting more than a certain number of days (such as 100 days). In earlier versions, the conditions were "the exchange is hacked and the user loses more than 10% of funds" or "withdrawals are suspended for more than 90 days." Ordinary personal operational mistakes, lost private keys, and losses caused by market price fluctuations are not covered.
There is a deductible. Some products set a deductible, and losses below that amount cannot be claimed.
The Real Boundaries of Claims
Even if you successfully buy cover, filing a claim is not a "fill out a form and wait for payment" process.
You must first pay a 0.05 ETH claim deposit. You need to submit this deposit with the transaction when filing a claim. If the claim is accepted, the deposit is returned. If it is judged a "draw", the deposit can be withdrawn. If it is rejected, the deposit is not returned.
Assessment is decided by vote of the Claims Committee. A three-member assessment committee reviews the evidence you submit. There is a 72-hour voting window, and a majority vote (2/3) is needed for acceptance. The result depends on whether the evidence is sufficient and whether the loss falls within the scope defined by the cover terms.
The most common reason for rejection is "the loss is not on the address or position you listed." Nexus Mutual requires you to specify the covered address or position at the time of purchase. This information cannot be changed after purchase. If you enter the wrong address when buying, or if you later move assets to another address and then suffer a loss, the claim will be rejected.
Payout is made in the denomination asset you selected at purchase. If you buy cover with USDC, the payout will also be in USDC, not an equivalent amount of another asset.
There is a 30-day window to claim the payout. After the claim is accepted, there is a 24-hour cooldown period. After that, you have 30 days to claim the payout. If you miss the window, the payout may no longer be claimable.
A More Practical Judgment
If you are in a restricted region, there is no actionable path for this. KYC is a hard threshold that cannot be bypassed, and the consequences of forcibly attempting it are yours to bear.
If you are not in a restricted region and your asset size is truly within Custody Cover's target range, my judgment is: Nexus Mutual's Custody Cover is more suitable as a supplementary measure for those who have some trust in an exchange but want an extra layer of protection. It is not suitable as a basis for thinking "putting assets on an exchange is completely safe." Its trigger conditions (hacks, withdrawal suspensions) cover systemic events at the exchange level, not your personal operational risks.
For ordinary users, a more practical order of protection is: keep the majority of assets in a self-custody wallet, leave only what is needed for trading on the exchange, and enable all available account security settings. These actions do not require KYC, do not require paying premiums, and take effect immediately.
