Binance Futures Grid: No Position After Starting? Here's Why

It's very common to see no position on the page when a Futures Grid strategy is first launched, and it's usually normal. If there is no position showing at startup, it typically comes down to two reasons: you created a neutral grid, which waits for price to hit boundary orders before opening a position; or you created a long or short grid but turned off the 'Market Order on Creation' option.

Step 1: Check What Type of Grid You Created

This is the root cause that determines whether you'll have a position after launch. Start by confirming this first.

What to do: On the strategy details page of the running grid, check the 'Direction' setting.

How to do it:

  • Scenario A (Neutral Grid): A neutral grid does not set an initial position by design. It merely places pending orders based on the grid range and current price, waiting for price to naturally trigger them. Having no position after startup is completely normal, not a malfunction.

  • Scenario B (Long or Short Grid): These grids allow you to choose whether to 'Open an Initial Position'. If you disabled the 'Market Order on Creation' option when creating the strategy, the system will not immediately generate a position at startup. If you chose to open a base position, a position in the corresponding direction will be established instantly upon launch.

What counts as completed: You have identified your grid type and whether the 'Market Order on Creation' option is enabled.

Common misunderstanding: Thinking that 'starting' equals 'buying immediately,' overlooking the limit‑order logic of a futures grid. In reality, after the strategy starts, the grid first places buy and sell limit orders across the preset price range. Trades and positions only appear when the market price touches those pending orders.

Step 2: Check if the Grid Got Stuck or Auto‑Stopped for Other Reasons

If it's not a neutral grid and you're certain that 'Market Order on Creation' was enabled, but there is still no position after startup, you need to check whether the strategy has triggered an abnormal state.

What to do: Look at the current strategy status and any error codes pushed by the system.

How to do it:

  • On the strategy page, check the status label. If it says 'Stopped' or 'Expired,' the strategy was terminated shortly after launching.

  • Common automatic stop reasons include:

    • Price out of range (opCode 8009): The current price may have already moved outside your defined grid range, so the system can't place orders as planned.

    • Insufficient margin (opCode 8008): The margin allocated is not enough to support the grid's position opening, causing the strategy to stop immediately upon launch.

    • Position liquidated (opCode 8005): If the account status is abnormal at the moment of launch, the strategy may also end instantly.

  • If your grid uses Cross Margin mode, you may also want to check whether the futures account triggered any restrictions due to an overall position risk limit.

What counts as completed: You've confirmed whether the strategy status is 'Running' or 'Stopped' and ruled out external factors such as price out of range or insufficient margin.

Step 3: Observe Subsequent Orders and Fills

A grid with no initial position doesn't mean it's 'dead.' It's simply waiting for the price to enter the trigger range you set.

What to do: On the current open orders page, check whether the grid strategy has placed any buy or sell limit orders.

How to do it:

  • Take a long grid as an example: if you set the price range to 50,000–60,000 USDT and the current price is 55,000 USDT, the grid will first place opening buy orders in the 50,000–55,000 range and closing sell orders in the 55,000–60,000 range. At this point it's an 'orders placed, no position' state.

  • Once the price drops to a buy order level and the order fills, you'll see a corresponding position in your holdings. At the same time, the grid will place a closing sell order at a slightly higher price, beginning the cycle.

What counts as completed: You've confirmed that pending orders from the grid exist in your current orders and that the running status is 'Working.'

How to Confirm Everything is Working Correctly

On the strategy details page, check three things:

  1. Strategy Status: Does it show 'Running' or 'Working'?

  2. Current Orders: In the open orders list for the relevant trading pair, can you see buy or sell limit orders placed by the grid strategy?

  3. Error Messages: If the strategy has stopped, look at the specific error code shown by the system (e.g., 8008, 8009) to determine whether the cause is margin, price range, or another restriction.

As long as pending orders exist and the status is normal, the grid is waiting for triggers according to the preset logic—no extra action is needed. If the page keeps showing 'No Position,' the position will automatically appear once the price touches the grid's boundary orders.
