Why OKX Requires Recipient Information for Withdrawals
OKX requires you to enter recipient information when withdrawing because of international transfer rules (Travel Rule) compliance. The platform needs to know who is receiving the funds to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing. This is not an extra check aimed at you personally — it is a global standard.
If you are asked to fill in these details during a withdrawal, it means your withdrawal falls within the scope of this rule. The following explains what to fill in, how to fill it in, and when you do not need to provide this information.
Prerequisites
- You have completed OKX identity verification and your account is in good standing.
- You are making an on-chain withdrawal (to an external wallet or exchange), not an internal transfer.
- You know the nature of the recipient — whether it is a private wallet or another exchange account.
Step 1: Confirm what information the system asks you to provide
After initiating a withdrawal, if the system requires additional information, the page will usually display the following fields:
- Recipient Name (Legal Full Name): Enter the verified real name associated with the recipient account.
- Recipient Address Type: Choose "Private Wallet" or "Exchange Account".
Completion Standard: Read the prompts carefully. Do not skip or close the page.
Step 2: Fill in according to the recipient's actual situation
Case A: Withdrawing to a private wallet (e.g., MetaMask, Trust Wallet)
- Recipient Name: Enter your own legal full name (consistent with your OKX verified identity).
- Address Type: Select "Private Wallet" or "Non-custodial Wallet".
In some cases, the system may require you to verify wallet ownership — by connecting your wallet to sign a message proving the address is yours. If verification fails, check whether the withdrawal address matches the signing address.
Case B: Withdrawing to another exchange (e.g., Binance)
- Recipient Name: Enter the full name you used for identity verification on the receiving exchange.
- Address Type: Select "Exchange Account".
Case C: Withdrawing to someone else (not yourself)
- Recipient Name: Enter the recipient's verified real name on their platform.
- Make sure the name the recipient tells you matches their verified identity exactly; otherwise, the withdrawal may fail.
Completion Standard: The information you enter exactly matches the recipient's verified identity, and no error appears after submission.
Step 3: Fill in Tag/Memo (if applicable)
If the recipient is on certain exchanges, the system may additionally require you to enter a Tag or Memo. This is an identifier used by the recipient platform to route the deposit. It must be entered correctly; otherwise, funds may not be credited. You can obtain this information on the deposit page of the receiving platform.
Completion Standard: The Tag/Memo is filled in correctly and submitted together with the receiving address.
Step 4: Complete security verification and submit withdrawal request
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete all security verification steps (SMS code, Google Authenticator code, email code, etc.) and click submit. The withdrawal will then enter the platform review and on-chain broadcast process.
Completion Standard: The page shows "Withdrawal request submitted", and you can check the status in your withdrawal history.
Common Failure Reason
Recipient name entered incorrectly or mismatched
The most common reason is that the name you entered does not match the recipient's legally verified name — for example, using a nickname, missing a middle name, or swapping the order of first and last names. If the withdrawal is rejected due to incorrect information, the assets will be returned to your account and you will receive an email notification. Simply enter the correct information when initiating a new withdrawal.
Risk Reminders
- Information is entered fresh each time: If a withdrawal is rejected and funds are returned to your account, the system does not retain the previously entered information. You must fill in all details again for a new withdrawal.
- No need to re-enter for the same address: If you have successfully withdrawn to a certain address before, subsequent transfers to the same address will automatically pull your record, and you do not need to fill in the recipient information again.
- Ensure the recipient account matches your input: If you are withdrawing to someone else, make sure the name verified on that person's platform matches exactly what you entered; otherwise, they may not be able to receive or credit the funds properly.
How to Confirm the Operation Is Complete
After submission, go to [Assets] → [Withdrawal History] to check the transaction status. When the status changes from "Processing" to "Completed" and you receive an email notification from OKX, the withdrawal is complete. If it was rejected due to Travel Rule information issues, the status will show "Failed" or "Returned". Check the rejection reason in the email, initiate a new withdrawal, and accurately fill in the recipient information.
