Partially closing an OKX futures position is just like a regular close—simply enter the amount you want to close in the position panel. The key point is: after closing a portion, your protective orders (stop-loss/take-profit) won't adjust automatically. You need to manually sync them; otherwise, they might become invalid or still execute based on the original full position size.

Step 1: Execute the Partial Close
First, perform the partial close from the position panel.
Path: On the futures trading interface, in the [Current Positions] area, find the position you want to close and click the [Close] button on the right.
How to do it: In the close order pop-up, manually modify the quantity to the amount or percentage you wish to close. For example, if you hold a 1 BTC long position and want to close half, change the quantity to 0.5. Both custom amounts and limit/market close are supported.
Completion standard: Once the order is filled, the position quantity in [Current Positions] will decrease, but the position still exists and has not been fully closed.
Step 2: Sync the Protective Orders (Stop-Loss/Take-Profit)
This is the most critical step and the easiest to overlook. On OKX, position-level stop-loss and take-profit orders are attached to the position. After a partial close, the original SL/TP orders won't automatically reduce proportionally. If you don't adjust them, the SL/TP order quantity might remain the full original amount, or they may execute based on the remaining position after the close, leading to invalid orders or unexpected liquidations.
Case A: Stop-Loss/Take-Profit set directly on the position If you set SL/TP directly on the position, after a partial close you need to manually adjust the order quantity and trigger price for the remaining position.
How to do it: On the [Current Positions] page, click the existing SL/TP on the position to edit it. Change the quantity to match the remaining position size and recalculate the trigger price based on the current entry price.
Completion standard: After editing, the SL/TP order quantity matches the remaining position.
Case B: Standalone Stop-Loss/Take-Profit orders in the order list If you used standalone SL/TP orders (not attached to a position), after a partial close these orders won't disappear or adjust automatically. You need to manually cancel or modify them to avoid having dangling orders.
How to do it: Go to [Current Orders] > [Stop-Loss/Take-Profit] list, find the corresponding order, click Modify or Cancel, then place a new order based on the remaining position.
Completion standard: The SL/TP orders in the list have quantities matching the remaining position, or are canceled.
Case C: Auto-Sync in Copy Trading If you are a copy trader, the situation is different. When the lead trader partially closes a position, the system will automatically close your copied order by the same proportion. For example, if the lead trader closes 50%, your copied order is also automatically closed by 50%. In this case, you don't need to manually adjust protective orders—the system syncs them automatically.
Risk reminder: If you don't manually update SL/TP orders after a partial close, two things could happen. One, the original orders remain active but with a quantity that exceeds your actual remaining position, causing the system to reject or cancel them. Two, if you fully close a position but forget to cancel the SL/TP orders, they might later trigger and open an unintended position. Always check the [Current Orders] > [Stop-Loss/Take-Profit] list after closing to verify the status.
Common Reasons for Failure
Stop-loss/take-profit orders are auto-canceled by the system: If you used attached SL/TP orders (e.g., with a limit order), once the limit order is partially filled or modified, the attached SL/TP orders are automatically cleared and become invalid.
Modifying a limit order voids attached SL/TP orders: OKX's rule is that when you modify a limit order, the attached SL/TP orders are removed for logical consistency. If you later modify the limit order used for closing, remember to re-set your SL/TP.

After Completing the Operation
Verification method: Go to [Current Orders] > [Stop-Loss/Take-Profit] list and check that the remaining SL/TP order quantities have been updated to match the remaining position.
Next step: If the remaining position is small, consider closing it entirely or tightening the SL/TP prices to avoid difficulty in filling protective orders due to tiny size.
