If your goal is to keep buying crypto over the long term without actively selling, Recurring Buy is more suitable than Spot Martingale. Although OKX's Spot Martingale includes DCA in its name, it actually works like this: buy more when the price drops, then sell once the price rebounds to your take-profit target. After one cycle completes, it starts again. This makes it better for repeatedly capturing small profits in a ranging market, rather than steadily growing your coin holdings over time. Recurring Buy, on the other hand, buys a fixed amount at a fixed interval with no take-profit selling step, which is much closer to the goal of long-term accumulation.

How They Actually Differ on OKX
OKX's official help documentation defines Martingale as a one-sided bet: when the direction is wrong, you add to your position multiple times, then sell for profit after the market pulls back. A full trading cycle includes an initial order and a take-profit order. Once the take-profit target is reached, the cycle ends and the next one begins. If the price keeps falling and triggers the stop-loss, the strategy stops, and your position may end in a loss.
Recurring Buy on OKX works differently. You choose the coin, allocation ratio, frequency (daily, weekly, or monthly), and amount. The system then buys automatically according to your plan, with no take-profit selling logic. Funds are deducted from your trading account each cycle. If the balance is insufficient, the recurring buy pauses until you top it up. The output is a steadily growing pile of coins, not profit from buying low and selling high.
The entry points for the two tools are also different. Spot Martingale is created under "Trade — Strategy Trading — Spot Martingale" in the App. You need to set parameters such as price gap for adding positions, take-profit target, initial order amount, safety order amount, and maximum number of add-ons. Recurring Buy is found under the trading bot section as "Recurring buy," where you only need to set the frequency and amount.
What Martingale Is Good For, and What It Is Not
OKX's own article is blunt about Martingale: it "does not improve the accuracy of market judgment; it only adjusts position cost through phased entries." In a ranging market, when the price drops and then rebounds to the take-profit line, the strategy can complete a cycle and make a profit. But if the market enters a sustained one-way decline, adding positions will keep increasing capital usage and floating losses. If the price never rebounds to the take-profit target, or if the stop-loss is triggered, the money you put in could face a significant loss. OKX clearly states that Spot Martingale is "not a capital-guaranteed strategy," and in extreme cases you could lose all the principal you invested.
Martingale also has a feature that conflicts with long-term holding: its source of profit is selling. After each cycle reaches the take-profit target, the strategy sells the position. What you are left with is USDT and profit, not a growing amount of BTC. If what you want is to accumulate coins for the long term, Martingale's selling action goes against that goal.
The limitation of Recurring Buy is that it offers no downside protection. When the price falls, you keep buying as planned, and the market value of your holdings shrinks. Its advantage comes from time and discipline: when you cannot judge short-term direction, buying at a fixed rhythm spreads out your entry points and helps you avoid putting everything in at a high. The cost is that if you keep buying during a sustained decline, your paper loss will persist, and you need a long enough holding period to wait for the market to change.
When Martingale May Be More Suitable
If your goal is not to hold more coins over the long term, but to use a portion of funds to repeatedly trade within a range and earn small profits denominated in USDT, and you are willing to set a clear stop-loss for that portion and accept that it could be wiped out, then Martingale can be used as a separate strategy tool. The conditions are: keep the amount you put in separate from your long-term holdings; set a maximum number of add-ons and a stop-loss, and do not add positions without limit; and understand that after each cycle ends with a sale, what you get is USDT, and you need to decide yourself whether to buy back.
But if your core need is to buy crypto over the long term, reduce timing decisions, and let your holdings grow over time, Recurring Buy is the better match. It gives up the flexibility of buying more when the price drops, but in return you get simple rules, no reliance on take-profit judgment, and no need to constantly monitor whether the strategy is stuck in a cycle.
A Practical Way to Decide
Open the OKX strategy trading page and look at the creation screens for Spot Martingale and Recurring Buy. Martingale's parameter list includes "take-profit target" and "maximum number of add-ons." Recurring Buy's parameter list only has frequency and amount. If your goal is long-term holding, ask yourself one question: are you willing to let the strategy automatically sell your BTC at a certain price? If not, Martingale's take-profit logic will conflict with your goal. Recurring Buy does not have this problem because it only buys and never sells.
For most readers whose purpose is long-term crypto buying, my judgment is this: first use Recurring Buy to build a base position. Treat Martingale as a trading tool that needs its own separate risk control, not as a way to accumulate coins. If you later want to try Martingale, use a small independent amount of funds, set a stop-loss, and treat it as practice for judging ranging markets. Do not mix it with your long-term holdings in the same account.
