If your borrowing limit is not enough, it may not be because your collateral is too small. It could be that your collateral has a low discount rate, you have reached your account level limit, or the platform-wide staking amount for that coin is already full.

What to do
Understand the three layers of OKX leverage borrowing limits, and find out whether you need to add collateral, switch coins, or repay some debt first when you cannot borrow.
Concept breakdown
Borrowing limit is not based only on how much money is in your account. The system checks three rules at the same time:
1. Collateral value is discounted (adjusted equity)
Your assets are not counted at full market value. OKX gives each coin a discount rate based on its liquidity. Coins with better liquidity have a higher discount rate, closer to 100%. For example, if you use BTC as collateral, the system may count it at about 98% of its value. If the coin has poor liquidity, the discount rate will be much lower.
Available margin = adjusted equity - present value of used margin. If your adjusted equity is not enough to cover the margin required by the current order, the order will fail.
2. User level and borrowing limit (main account limit)
Different VIP levels have different borrowing limits. From May 27, 2026, regular users under the general strategy mode have a USDT borrowing limit of 2,000,000 USDT. The higher the VIP level, the higher the limit. If your borrowing amount exceeds the limit, you need to repay before you can borrow again.
3. Platform-wide total collateral borrowing cap (platform limit)
Each coin has a platform-wide total collateral borrowing cap. When a coin's platform-wide collateral amount reaches the cap, that coin cannot be used as margin for new orders, and cannot support borrowing or opening positions. Existing positions and liabilities are not affected, but new orders will fail.
If a coin is close to the cap, the asset list will show a yellow "Collateral Restriction" tag next to that coin. If it reaches the cap, it will show a red "Collateral Restriction" tag, meaning that coin can no longer be used as collateral.
Comparison choices
| Borrowing failure reason | How to tell | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral discount rate too low | You have assets, but the amount you can borrow is far below the market value of those assets | Switch to more liquid coins such as USDT, BTC, or ETH, or check the asset list for a "Collateral Restriction" tag |
| Main account borrowing limit reached | The system says you exceeded your user level limit | Repay some debt before borrowing again, or upgrade your VIP level to raise the limit |
| Platform-wide collateral cap reached | The asset list shows a red "Collateral Restriction" tag next to the coin name | Use a different coin that has not reached the cap as collateral, or wait for the platform to free up room |
| Maintenance margin rate is near the critical level | In single-coin cross margin, liquidation is triggered when the margin rate is ≤ 100% | Add margin first, then consider borrowing |
How to do it
Step 1: Check the "Collateral Restriction" tag in the asset list
On the trading page asset list, if a coin has a red "Collateral Restriction" tag next to it, that coin has reached the platform-wide collateral cap and cannot provide margin for borrowing or opening new positions. First switch to a coin that is not restricted.
Step 2: Check whether your adjusted equity is enough
In spot borrowing mode, the system checks whether your adjusted equity is greater than or equal to the margin required by the current order. If not, the system will reject the order.
Step 3: Confirm whether you have reached the user level limit
If your borrowing amount is close to or reaches the USDT borrowing limit for your current VIP level (2 million USDT for regular users under the general strategy mode), you need to repay some debt before continuing to borrow, or upgrade your VIP level.
Step 4: If the system says "maximum borrowable amount exceeded"
The maximum borrowable amount is determined by the smallest of these three: user level borrowing limit, coin position tier limit, and actual available funds on the borrowing page. In this case, you can only free up room by repaying debt, or switch to another coin that has not reached its limit.

Completion standard
After making changes, enter the amount you want to borrow on the leverage borrowing page. The system shows that the available amount is larger than your request, and does not show errors such as "maximum borrowable amount exceeded" or "Collateral Restriction". The asset list also does not show a red "Collateral Restriction" tag for the coin you are using.
