Without a mainland Chinese ID card, you can still complete OKX's KYC verification using a passport, Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan travel permit, or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card. Below, we list the supported document types and key steps based on your identity.

Step 1: Identify your identity category

OKX's KYC system offers different document options for users from different regions. Start by matching your situation:

User IdentityAccepted Document Types
Mainland Chinese residentSecond-generation resident ID card (preferred) or passport
Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan residentMainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents, or Residence Permit for Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Residents
Overseas / foreign userPassport (must contain photo, full name, date of birth, expiry date and issuing country)
Foreign national living long-term in mainland ChinaForeign Permanent Resident ID Card

What "done" means: You know which column you fall into and which document you should use.

Step 2: Use a passport – the universal method for Hong Kong/Macau/Taiwan residents and foreign users

If you hold a valid passport, regardless of your region, you can complete KYC directly with your passport.

How to do it:

  1. Log in to the OKX app or website and go to the 【Identity Verification】 page

  2. Under "Document Type", select "Passport"

  3. Enter your passport number, issuing country/region, date of issue and expiry date – double-check every detail against your physical passport

  4. Upload a photo of the passport personal information page: all four corners must be visible, text clear, no glare, no cropping

  5. Fill in basic information such as nationality, name, date of birth

Difference from ID card verification:

  • When using a passport, the system skips facial recognition and enters the manual review queue

  • Review time is therefore longer than with an ID card: typically around 2 business days, as opposed to the automatic review in minutes for ID cards

What "done" means: The passport personal information page photo has been uploaded and the status shows "Under review".

Step 3: Documents specific to Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan users

If you hold a Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents (Home Return Permit) or a Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents (Taibao Permit), you can choose the corresponding option under document type.

Key points:

  1. On the verification page, click 【Change document type】

  2. Select "Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents" or "Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents"

  3. Upload photos of the front and back of the permit, meeting the same standards as ID card uploads: all four corners visible, no glare, text clear

  4. The system will also skip facial recognition and enter manual review, which takes about 2 business days

What "done" means: You have selected the correct document type, uploaded the photos, and submitted successfully.

Step 4: Photo requirements – apply to all document types

No matter which document you use, you must ensure your photos meet the following standards before submission, otherwise your application will be rejected:

  • All four corners visible: The entire document must appear in the image; do not crop off any corners

  • No glare or obstruction: No bright spots on the document surface; all text and the photo must be clearly readable

  • Color original: Must not be a screenshot, a scan of a copy, a photo of a photocopy, or an image with watermarks

  • Within validity: The document must not be expired

  • File format: JPG, JPEG, PNG; for individual verification, keep file size under 2 MB

What "done" means: When you zoom in on the preview, all information on the document can be clearly read.

Common reasons for rejection and risk reminders

  • Selecting "ID card" but uploading a passport photo: The system will detect the mismatch and reject immediately.

  • Using a temporary ID or a photocopy: OKX explicitly does not accept temporary ID cards or paper documents.

  • Passport missing the latest entry stamp page: In some cases the system may request you to upload the most recent entry stamp page. Follow the on-screen prompts.

  • Information entered does not match the document: Any discrepancy in name spelling or document number (e.g., letter "X" must be capitalized) will lead to rejection.

Risk reminders:

  • Passport verification goes through manual review – do not expect results in minutes. Wait patiently for up to 2 business days.

  • Do not resubmit while under manual review, or the review timer will reset.

  • If the system asks for "proof of address" or "supplementary materials", prepare a bank statement or utility bill from the last 3 months and upload as instructed.
